A combination of sophisticated instrumentation systems has been used to evaluate the behaviour of lemniscate linkage supports and surrounding strata at thin and thick seam longwall coalfaces. A structural evaluation procedure that incorporates the finite element stress analysis technique has indicated the potential for optimisation of the lemniscate linkage support structure with the aims of achieving weight reduction and lower manufacturing cost for supports which are able to meet the same duty specifications.
