Spanish term or phrase: dar reparo para
This is the first sentence in a text about an Argentine woman artist from the 20th century who is experiencing something of a revival:

Hay algo del caminar en el margen que da reparo para limitarse cada vez menos.

I understand "da reparo" to make give qualms...but the preposition "para" confuses me. Is that experience on the margin something that would make her uneasy about limits?

English translation:protects me from
Explanation:
"There is something about walking on the edge that makes one feel increasingly protected from the need to restrict or limit one's art."

A contrary interpretation, and a positive statement. Other proposals suggest the speaker is being negative about her art.

Reparo also means shelter (see examples below) I believe what she is saying is that having been on the edge she has less need to limit herself in her work, that she is protected from the need to restrict her art.

to hesitate to ( do something)

Explanation:
There is something about walking on the margin that makes one hesitate to limit oneself less and less.( that makes one cast off inhibitions)

'dar reparo para'= 'hacerse dudar en (lo que sea);

feel uneasy about

Explanation:
... da reparo para limitarse cada vez menos: there is something about drifting on the sidelines that makes fewer and fewer (vs. less and less) self-imposed limits something / for such drifter/ to feel uneasy about.

Langenscheidt: dar reparo SPA/DEU -> to shirk; fight shy of doing sthg.

Otherwise, as a matter of style, take the incongruous (Argentinian-specific ?) preposition with a pinch of salt.

Example sentence(s):
  • Dar reparo algo a alguien significa que ese alguien encuentra dificultad en hacer algo (en este caso, mirarla) debido a que le da apuro o vergüenza, por timidez, etc. Sí, como dice Vocablo, feel uneasy about es como yo siempre lo he visto traducido.

to cause concern

Explanation:
A few adaptations trying to render clearly the idea (da reparo para= finalidad):

There is something about walking on the margin that causes concern when one tries to limit oneself less and less.

There is something about walking on the margin that makes one hesitate when it comes to limiting oneself less and less.

There is something about walking on the margin that discourages us from limiting ourselves less and less.

Spanish to English translation

Explanation:
Yes, your interpretation is on the right track. In this context, "dar reparo para" can be understood as "gives pause to" or "makes one hesitate to." So, the sentence can be translated as:

"There is something about walking on the margins that gives pause to limiting oneself each time less."

It suggests that the experience of navigating the margins or boundaries is making the person reconsider or hesitate to set stricter limits on themselves.

Example sentence(s):
  • Her adventurous spirit and love for exploration often gave her pause to confine herself to the familiar. The artist\\\'s unconventional style and boundary-pushing works of art gave critics pause to categorize her within traditional genres.
  • Embracing diversity and inclusivity in the workplace can sometimes give management pause to enforce rigid rules. The constant changes in technology give educators pause to adapt their teaching methods. As she delved deeper into her research, the scienti

Explanation:
I agree with patinba as regards meaning.

Just another option, tinkering with how poetic that description sounds.

Example sentence(s):
  • There's something about walking on the fringe/edge/margins that shelters you so that you limit yourself ever less/less and less.

Pues sí queda extraña esa preposición pero resulta que se dice, aunque puede resultar poco ortodoxa o incluso confundir

La idea de finalidad es bastante clara, como lingüista añadir que en muchos casos sobra y se entendería la frase sin ese "para".
