Picos de corrosão / Pitting:
A corrosão por picos pode causar danos graves. O pitting pode tomar a forma de pequenos orifícios, 1-2 mm de profundidade e diâmetro para começar. Por vezes, eles estão quase escondidos abaixo da superfície do aço com um "orifício de entrada" de apenas alguns décimos de mm, com uma cavidade de 1-2 mm abaixo. Eles são, portanto, às vezes muito difíceis de detetar. Os chamados testes de líquidos penetrantes são úteis para deteção quando se sabe aproximadamente onde procurar defeitos.
