Het verloop van de nerven in een blad noemen we nervatuur. Er zijn drie verschillende typen te onderscheiden. Veernervige bladeren hebben één hoofdnerf. De zijnerven verlopen vanaf de hoofdnerf naar de bladrand. Bij handnervige bladeren vertakt de hoofdnerf zich aan de voet van het blad in meerdere even dikke nieuwe hoofdnerven.
