Definitia clasica a impozitului spune ca acesta este o contributie obligatorie, neconditionata si fara contraprestatie la suportarea sarcinii publice iar in cazul taxei exista contraprestatie ex. taxa platita pt supralegalizarea unui act etc. Taxa pe valoare adaugata este un impozit insa datorita faptului ca a fost preluat din engleza und tax inseamna impozit a ajuns sa aiba aceasta denumire (False friend)
