English to Danish: False Positive Bearing Fault Diagnosis is Followed by True Diagnosis

Diagnosing a bearing fault can be tricky, especially when data are acquired on a machine subjected to external vibrations. Any indication of a potential bearing fault on critical machines is a matter of concern and should be investigated. Even more alarming are sudden incidents of trouble on otherwise smooth running machines.
A potential problem was first detected in PeakVue© data. A spectrum in early March 2008 showed a set of harmonics (BSF) fault in a NU321 cylindrical roller bearing.
Impact at BSF of surprisingly high magnitude could be seen in the time waveform. This pattern was watched closely over several surveys and consistently showed the presence of the frequency of interest.
The low magnitude BSF harmonics were also observed in the normal vibration data. Note the significantly higher magnitude in the PeakVue© time waveform over that in normal data. The sudden onset of the problem was a serious concern. A cracked roller was considered a possible cause, but the lack of typical side bands in the BSF harmonics made the cage-frequency-diagnosis questionable. In addition, low-order harmonics dominated the normal spectrum; a crack typically produces a short impact that result in high order harmonics. These considerations were later dismissed on the basis of possible weak modulation and the presence of impacts clearly visible in PeakVue©. Therefore, a cracked roller remained a plausible consideration.
The pattern seemed unchanged for eight months. The keyword is seemed, because a cascade plot provided a false impression of consistency after the onset. A detailed analysis of the frequency of interest conducted a few months following the onset actually showed slight fluctuations over this period while the shaft speed was constant.
It was later discovered that what was initially perceived as a BSF fault wa in fact the operating frequency of an air-activated impact vibrator installed shortly before the March survey ten feet away from the bearing. The vibrator's powerful impact was bleeding to the measurement point at the bearing. However, the apparent existence of a rolling element fault could not initially be dismissed.
