May 8 (posted viaProZ.com): I am currently finishing a big project for a Korean company POSCO Eco & Challenge (formerly known as Engineering and Construction) that is building an ecological waste to energy plant in Warsaw, Poland. It is an impressive 2 bn PLN project. I am responsible for translation and interpretation from Polish to English and English to Polish. This includes translating documentation, both legal and technical of the various documents that are part of the usual workflow. Tekst źródłowy - polski Teoria katastrof, zwana również teorią morfogenezy, została opracowana przez francuskiego matematyka R. Thoma w latach 1960-tych [1]. Jest to ogólna metoda modelowania systemów, która w szczególności może wyjaśnić sposób powstawania nieciągłych efektów z ciągłych przyczyn. Początkowo była ona wykorzystywana do opisu biologicznej morfogenezy, jednak stosunkowo szybko znalazła zastosowanie w innych dziedzinach nauki, głównie w fizyce [2–4]. Głównym źródłem matematycznym tej metody jest topologia. Dzięki temu teoria katastrof odwołuje się do intuicji geometrycznych badacza.

Funkcja (1) może reprezentować potencjał, energię, prawdopodobieństwo lub koszt. Ta ostatnia interpretacja jest szczególnie cenna z ekonomicznego punktu widzenia, gdyż w naturalny sposób odzwierciedla fakt, że w systemach realizowane jest podstawowe prawo ekonomii – zasada racjonalnego gospodarowania.
Przez katastrofę należy rozumieć gwałtowne, nagłe przejście badanego układu do nowego stanu. Nie musi to być koniecznie stan gorszy od poprzedniego, a więc słowo „katastrofa” ma w tej teorii znaczenie szersze od znaczenia potocznego, gdzie kojarzy się z czymś złym lub groźnym, z jakąś klęską. Katastrofą może być zagotowanie się wody w czajniku, hossa na giełdzie lub likwidacja przedsiębiorstwa. Chodzi tu o nagłość zmian w zachowaniu obiektu w porównaniu do średniej zmiany w przeszłości. Teoria katastrof łączy w jeden spójny system pojęciowy dwa pozornie sprzeczne i niezwiązane z sobą rodzaje opisu zjawisk: ewolucyjność i rewolucyjność, ciągłość i nieciągłość. Pozwala na przedstawienie całkowitej drogi obiektu jako zmian ciągłych, które przerywane są nagłymi zmianami jakościowymi. W ten sposób teoria ta staje się użytecznym narzędziem w badaniach strukturalnych.

[1] It is a general method of systems modeling, which can explain in particular how discontinuous effects come to being from continuous causes. At first, it was used to describe biological morphogenesis, however it was relatively rapidly applied in other walks of science, mainly in physics [2-4]. The main mathematical source for this method is topology. Owing to this, the catastrophe theory appeals to geometrical intuition of a researcher. The function (1) can represent potential, energy, probability, or cost. This last interpretation is particularly valuable from an economic point of view, because it naturally confirms that a basic law of economics is observed in the systems – the rational managing principle.
Catastrophe means violent, sudden transition of the tested system into a new state. It does not necessarily have to be a state worse than its predecessor, so the term „catastrophe” has a much broader meaning in this theory than the colloquial meaning, where it is associated with something evil or hazardous, e.g. some kind of disaster. Catastrophe is illustrated by boiling water in a kettle, a bull market, or company going into liquidation. What is important here is the rapidity of changes in the behavior of an object as compared with the mean change in the past. The catastrophe theory merges two apparently contradictory and unrelated kinds of phenomena description to form one coherent notion system: evolutionism and revolutionism, continuity and discontinuity. It allows to present the complete way of an object as continuous changes, which are interrupted by sudden quality changes. In this way, this theory becomes a useful tool in structural research.

Tekst źródłowy - polski Termin matryca dyscyplinarna został wprowadzony do nauki przez Kuhna (2001), który za jego pośrednictwem chciał wyjaśnić szereg nieporozumień związanych z percepcją napisanej przez siebie pracy o rewolucjach naukowych. Okazało się, że środowisko uczonych bardzo różnie interpretowało pojęcie paradygmatu. Jak przyznaje sam Kuhn (1985, s. 406), po dyskusjach z czytelnikami swojej książki miał on nieraz wątpliwości, czy wszyscy czytali ten sam tekst. Jednocześnie ma on świadomość, że ponosi pewną winę za ten stan rzeczy, gdyż nie podał nigdzie precyzyjnej definicji paradygmatu. Łatwo wykazać, że autor Struktury rewolucji naukowych używał go co najmniej w trzech różnych znaczeniach:
1) powszechnie uznawane osiągnięcie naukowe dostarczające społeczności uczonych modelowych problemów i rozwiązań;
2) zespół charakterystycznych przekonań i uprzedzeń jednej z tryumfujących szkół przedparadygmatycznych, które uwypuklają tylko część zbyt obszernych wyjściowych informacji i mogą mieć charakter instrumentalny, teoretyczny oraz metafizyczny;
3) wspólne cechy określonej tradycji lub praktyki badawczej.
Wprawdzie te definicje w dużej mierze się pokrywają, jednak są na tyle rozmyte, że może to być przedmiotem pewnych kontrowersji i nieporozumień. Należy podkreślić, że paradygmat może określać zinternalizowane przekonania grupy naukowej, a więc mieć sens globalny, lub odnosić się tylko do szczególnego rodzaju tych przekonań, co nadaje mu charakter lokalny.
Paradygmat i wspólnota naukowa są pojęciami, które mają zbliżone znaczenie i sens logiczny, stąd jeden z nich nie powinien być wykorzystywany do zdefiniowania drugiego, gdyż w rezultacie powstanie błędne koło. Dla Kuhna jest to oczywiste, dlatego proponuje uznać, że wspólnoty naukowe są bytem niezależnym. Przez taką wspólnotę należy rozumieć zbiór osób uprawiających daną dziedzinę nauki. Wspólnym mianownikiem jednostek wcho-dzących w skład grupy jest wykształcenie, praktyka zawodowa, podobne lektury i wyciąganie z nich zbliżonych wniosków. W ramach określonej wspólnoty bardzo dobrze rozwinięta jest sieć komunikacyjna, a jej członkowie mają zbieżne poglądy w kwestiach zawodowych. Komunikacja między różnymi grupami jest utrudniona, często prowadzi do nieporozumień i ujawniania się niezgodności poglądów, czego podstawową przyczyną są różnice w przedmiocie badań. Wspólnoty naukowe – zdaniem Kuhna – przypominają wyspy rozrzucone na morzu, przy czym mieszkańcy każdej z nich bardzo rzadko odwiedzają innych. Ponadto społeczności uczonych mają budowę hierarchiczną, przykładem grupy wyższego rzędu mogą być wszyscy przyrodnicy, wspólnoty niższego rzędu tworzą fizycy, chemicy, astronomowie czy biolodzy. W ramach poszczególnych grup można wyodrębnić wiele podgrup, podział ten ma jednak pewną granicę. Działalność naukowa prowadzona jest przez grupy liczące po mniej więcej sto osób, a podstawowym kryterium ich wyodrębnienia jest specjalność uprawiana przez członków, czyli dokładnie sprecyzowany przedmiot badań.
Tłumaczenie pisemne - angielski The notion of disciplinary matrix was introduced by Kuhn (1996) who, by the em-ployment of the notion, wanted to explain several misunderstandings connected with the per-ception of his work on scientific revolutions. It turns out that the scientific community has tended to interpret the notion of a paradigm in various ways. As Kuhn (1977) himself admits, after discussions with readers of his book he doubted whether everybody had read the same text. Simultaneously, he is aware of the fact that he is partly to blame for that situation as he had never given a precise definition of a paradigm. It is easy to prove that the author of The Structure of Scientific Revolutions used the notion with three various meanings:
1) commonly acknowledged scientific achievement providing model problems and solu-tions to the scientific community;
2) the set of characteristic features and forecasts of one of the former dominating schools, which emphasize only a part of the too abundant entrance information and may be of the instrumental, theoretical or metaphysical characteristics;
3) shared characteristics of a given tradition or research practice.
Indeed, the definitions overlap to a large extent, but they are also blurred, which may lead to some controversies and misunderstanding. It should be stressed that the notion of a paradigm may define the internalized convictions of some scientists, and have a global meaning, or it can refer to some specific kind of the convictions, and be of the local character.
The paradigm and the scientific community are notions with a close meaning and logi-cal sense; that is why one should not be used to define the other as it inevitably creates a vi-cious circle. It is obvious for Kuhn and that is why he proposes to accept the fact that scien-tific communities are an independent entity. Such a community is a group of persons involved in a given field of science. The common denominator for the individuals included in the group is education, work experience, similar reading interests, and drawing similar conclusions. Within the framework of some defined community the communication network is very well developed and its members have similar opinions on work-related issues. Communication between various groups is hindered; it often leads to misunderstanding and to differences in opinions, whereas the basic cause is the diversity of the research subject. Scientific communi-ties, according to Kuhn, resemble islands scattered at sea, whose inhabitants rarely visit other islands. Moreover, the scientific communities are hierarchical and given groups have many sub-groups. There is a limit to it, though. Scientific activity is led by circa one-hundred-person groups, and their basic criterion of distinction is a given area of expertise, i.e. the precisely defined subject of research.
