A Guide for Parents
What is an Individual Education Plan?
The plan is a way for the Peel District School Board to support your child’s learning. We want to understand your child’s interests, strengths, needs and goals. It’s important for us to know that for any child. For children with special learning needs, this information is included in an Individual Education Plan. The plan helps us to provide the special education programs or services that your child requires to succeed.
How is the plan developed?
The special education team in your child’s school writes the plan, with help from:
• Your child’s teachers.
• Other experts, like guidance counsellors, special education staff who were involved earlier in this process, the principal.
• Other information, like a past Individual Education Plan, your child’s Ontario Student Record, or assessments (such as your child’s education, health or behaviour).
• Your family. As a parent, you play an essential role in creating the best plan. The information you provide helps the school to understand your child’s personality, development, learning and preferences. Your child may also be involved in shaping the plan (and has the right to be consulted after age 16). When students are part of the process, like setting educational goals, they usually take a greater responsibility for their own learning.
The plan must be created within 30 school days of your child starting special education. You’ll get a copy of the plan, and another will go in your child’s Ontario Student Record.
