В частности, Приднестровье -- Transdniestria часто называют.
Иными словами, каждый случай -- особый. :) Во всяком случае, я не встречал общего правила.

Особенности геогр. названий видны и в русском словоупотреблении: мы говорим \"Приднепровье\", \"Приднестровье\", но -- \"Поволжье\" или \"Подмосковье\". Все зависит от того, \"при\" чем. :)
