Yes, that's what I meant by both opening and epiphany (can't remember offhand which writer talked about such openings). But opening also covers the literal.

Yes, opening seems a safe bet. Epiphany in the sense "revelation" perhaps?

agree Yvonne Gallagher : think "epiphany" won't work here (not in Joycean sense anyway) but quite like "revelation" or simply "opening"
