این بیماری به دلیل ترس فرد از افزایش وزن ایجاد شده و فرد دچار لاغری مفرط می شود، ازخوردن غذا امتناع می کند و یا غذا را خورده اما عمدتا بر می گرداند. این افراد معمولاً تصویری نادرست از اندام خود دارند . همیشه خیال می کنند چاق بوده و به اندازه کافی لاغر یا خوش اندام نیستند .
