Source text - English My baby refuses to drink from a cup
Q: My baby can drink water from a cup, but refuse milk from it. What should I do?
A: This is probably related to their learning experience. Some parents seldom use cup to offer milk when babies are learning to drink from a cup. Babies, therefore, have little experience of drinking milk from a cup. If parents often use cup to offer water, babies are likely to associate drinking cup with water. As a result, babies can be reluctant to drink milk from a cup even they have learnt drinking from it.
As a parent, you don’t need to feel frustrated. With your help and consistency, your baby should learn it through time. It might require a little while for your baby to get use to this new experience. Be persistent with the change – use cup to offer milk. Try not to go back to bottle even if he/she is consuming less milk, and don’t allow drinking while he/she is sleeping or lying in bed. If you think your baby is drinking less milk and you are concerning about their calcium intake, you would provide other dairy products and calcium-rich alternatives such as cheese, yogurt and tofu for them. You can also try adding milk in your dishes, for example milk and egg custard, milk porridge.
Q: Can I offer milk to my baby when I introduce a cup to him?
A: Yes. You can put milk, water, diluted juice. In fact, you can put any fluids that are suitable for babies into their cups. This helps them to get familiar with drinking different beverages from a cup and wean from the bottle timely.
Q: What should I do if my baby refuses to drink from a cup?
A: Sometimes babies may refuse using the cup. The following tips help you overcome their resistance:
1. Check the cup
If you are using a spill-proof cup, there is a non-spill valve inside or a teat that make drinks flow very slowly; which means that your baby would need to suck harder to get the drink. To make it easier for your baby, simply remove the valve or teat such that water flows freely when the cup is tilted. Moving from a lidded training cup to a cup would facilitate baby to learn the skills required to drinking from a free-flow cup;
May be your baby just doesn’t like that training cup and its material. Try another one with different designs, different shapes and texture of the spout.
2. Make them feel interested
Your baby may have refused drinking from the cup because he/she does not aware there is drinks inside ;
Bring some of the drink (either be the water or milk) on to the mouthpiece of the drinking cup, and let your baby have a taste of it - this might just get them interested.
3. Babies love to imitate others
Drink with them and demonstrate to them;
Let your baby join the family meals – they are more likely to try when they see others are drinking and eating.
4. Babies only drink very small amount at a time
Babies usually take a sip each time. They do not drink large amount of water as they get most of the water intake from milk and other moist/soft foods
Try offer water more often, make drinking cup accessible for them. Forcing baby to drink or eat can increase their resistance.
5. Offer the cup when they are in good mood
The best time to encourage your baby to use a cup is when they are wide awake and pleasant;
Avoid giving your baby the cup to try when they are hungry, thirsty, grumpy, or tired.
Q: My 6 month old is breastfed and has not used the bottle so far. She does not like the training cup. Should I introduce a bottle to her first then training cup?
A: You can offer your baby a training cup directly. When you introduce the training cup, she may refuse it at first because her oral muscles are not ready. Do try again few days later. Most children are able to drink from a cup between 7 to 9 months of age. If your baby has never really used a bottle, you don’t need to introduce a bottle and then change to cup. These save you from weaning the bottle to cup in the future.

سوال: میرا بچہ پیالی میں پانی پی لیتا ہے مگر اس میں دودھ پینے سے انکار کر دیتا ہے، مجھے کیا کرنا چاہیئے؟
جواب: اس کا تعلق غالباً ان کے سیکھنے کے عمل سے ہے۔ کچھ والدین ایسا شازونادر ہی کرتے ہیں کہ وہ اپنے بچے کو، جبکہ وہ پیالی میں پینا سیکھ رہے ہوتے ہیں تو وہ انہیں پیالی میں دودھ پینے کی پیشکش کریں چنانچہ بچوں کو پیالی سے دودھ پینے کا بہت کم تجربہ ہوتا ہے۔ اگر والدین اکثر پانی پینے کے لیئے پیالی میں پیش کریں تو یہ ہو سکتا ہے کہ بچے پیالی سے پانی پینا اپنا لیں نتیجے کے طور پر بچے پیالی سے دودھ پینے سے ہچکچا سکتے ہیں اگرچہ وہ اس سے پینا سیکھ بھی چکے ہوں۔
بطور والدین آپ کو پریشان ہونے کی ضرورت نہیں ہے ۔ آپ کی مدد اور تسلسل کی وجہ سے آپ کا بچہ وقت گذرنے کے ساتھ ساتھ یہ سب سیکھ لے گا۔ اس کے لیئے آپ کے بچے کو کچھ وقت درکار ہوگا کہ وہ اس نئے تجربے سے روسشناس ہو سکے۔ تبدیلی کے ساتھ وابستہ رہیں۔ دودھ پیش کرنے کے لیئے پیالی پیش کریں۔ کوشش کریں کہ واپس بوتل کی طرف نہ جائیں چاہے آپ کا بچہ /بچی دودھ کم ہی کیوں نہ پی رہا ہو۔ اور جب وہ سو رہا / سو رہی ہو یا لیٹا ہوا ہو تو اسے کچھ بھی پینے کی اجازت نہ دیں اگر آپ یہ سوچتی ہیں کہ آپ کا بچہ دودھ کم پی رہا ہے اور آپ کو اس کی کیلشیئم کی مقدار سے پریشانی ہے تو آپ کو ڈیری کی دیگر مصنوعات یا زیادہ کیلشیئم والی متبادل اشیاء جیسے پنیر، دہی اور ٹوفو مہیا کرنی چاہیں۔ آپ ان کے کھانوں میں دودھ والی چیزوں، مثال کے طور پر دود اور انڈوں، کسٹرڈ اور ملک پوریج کا اضافہ کر سکتے ہیں۔
سوال: کیا میں اپنے بچے کو، جب کہ اسے پیالی سے متعارف کرایا جا رہا ہو، میں اسے دودھ پیش کر سکتی ہوں؟

1. پیالی کو چیک کریں
اگر سپل پروف پیالی استعمال کر رہے ہیں تو اس میں ایک نان سپل والو ہوتا ہے یا اس میں ایک ٹوٹنی لگی ہوتی ہے جس سے مشروبات بہت آہستگی سے بہتے ہیں اس کا مطلب یہ ہے کہ آپ کے بچے کو مشروب لینے کے لیئے زیادہ زور سے چوسنا پڑے گا۔ اپنے بچے کے لیئے اسے آسان بنانے کے لیئے بس اتنا کریں کہ یا تو اس والو کو ہٹا دیں یا پھر اس ٹوٹنی کو اتنا کھول دیں کہ جس سے پانی بھری پیالی سے باآسانی بہنے لگے۔ ڈھکن لگی پیالی سے ایک پیالی کی طرف آنا، آپ کے
بچے کو ایک کھلے بہنے والی پیالی سے پینے کے لیئے درکار مہارت حاصل کرنے میں مدد دے گی؛
ہو سکتا ہے کہ آپ کا بچہ اس تربیتی پیالی اور اس کے مواد کو پسند نہ کرے ایک اور جس کا
ڈیزائن، شکل وصورت وغیرہ مختلف ہو اسے ٹرائی کریں۔
2. انہیں دلچسپی محسوس کرنے دیں
ہو سکتا ہے کہ آپ کے بچے نے پیالی سے پینے سے انکار کر دیا ہو کیونکہ اسے معلوم نہیں ہے اس کے بیچ میں مشروب موجود ہے؛
کچھ مشروب پینے والی پیالی کے ماؤتھ پیس میں لائیں (چاہے پانی یا دودھ) اوراپنے بچے کو اس کا ذائقہ لینے کا موقع دیں۔ یہ چیز ان کے لیئے دلچسپی کا باعث بن جائے گی۔
3. بچے دوسروں کی نقل کرنا پسند کرتے ہیں
ان کے ساتھ پیئیں اور انہیں کر کے دکھائیں؛
اپنے بچے کو اہل خانہ کے ساتھ کھانے پر ملنے دیں، اس کا بہت حد تک امکان ہے کہ وہ جب دوسروں کو کھاتے پیتے دیکھیں گے تو وہ بھی کھانے کی کوشش کریں گے۔
4. بچے ایک وقت میں بہت کم پیتے ہیں
بچے عام طور پر ہر بار ایک چسکی لیتے ہیں۔ وہ زیادہ مقدار میں پانی نہیں پیتے ہیں کیونکہ وہ پانی کی بڑی مقدار دودھ اور دیگر نرم اور سیال اشیاء سے ہی پوری کر لیتے ہیں
انہیں کئی بار پانی کی پیشکش کریں، پینے والی پیالی کو ان کی دسترس میں رکھیں۔ بچوں کو کھانے پینے پر مجبور کرنے سے ان میں مزاحمت بڑھ سکتی ہے۔
5. پیالی اس وقت پیش کریں جب ان کا موڈ اچھا ہو
اپنے بچے کو پیالی کے استعمال کے لیئے ہمت افزائی کے لیئے بہترین وقت وہ ہوتا ہے جب وہ پوری طرح بیدار ہوں اور خوشگوار موڈ میں ہوں؛
بچے جب بھوکے ہوں، پیاسے ہوں، چڑے ہوئے ہوں یا جب وہ تھکے ہوئے ہوں تو انہیں پیالی دینے سے اجتناب کریں۔
سوال: میری 6 سال کی بچی ماں کا دودھ پیتی ہے اور ابھی تک اس نے بوتل استعمال نہیں کی ہے وہ تربیتی پیالی کو پسند نہیں کرتی ہے کیا مجھے ایک بوتل اسے متعارف کرا دینی چاہیئے اس سے پہلے
کہ اسے تربیتی پیالی دی جائے؟
جواب: آپ اپنے بچے کو براہ راست تربیتی پیالی پیش کر سکتے ہیں جب آپ تربیتی پیالی متعارف کرتے ہیں وہ اس سے پہلے پہل انکار کر سکتی ہے کیونکہ اس کے منہ کے مسل ابھی اس کے لیئے تیار نہیں ہیں۔ کچھ دنو N بعد ایک بار پھر کوشش کریں۔ زیادہ تر بچے 7 سے 9 ماہ کی عمر میں پیالی سے پی لینے کے قابل ہوجاتے ہیں۔ اگر آپ کے بچے نے واقعتاً کبھی بوتل استعمال نہیں کی ہے تو آپ کو اسے ممتعارف کرانے کی ضرورت نہیں ہے کہ پہلے آپ بوتل اور پھر پیالی سے تبدیل کریں۔ یہ چیز آپ کو مستقبل میں بوتل چھڑا کر پیالی تک لانے میں آپ کو بچاتی ہے۔
