Source text - Vietnamese You may find it rather surprising that I, as an environmentalist, am advocating the hitherto unthinkable, but I’m now becoming convinced that we need to re-open the debate on nuclear energy. I make this case because it’s now becoming clear that international attempts to limit greenhouse gas emissions have been singularly unsuccessful, both globally and at the national level here in Australia, so an openness to new approaches is needed.
I also realise that the anti-nuclear movement in Australia has been very influential in having nuclear power plants prohibited by federal laws. On the other hand, of all the developed nations the fastest growth in carbon dioxide emissions per capita is occurring in Australia, largely because Australia is almost twice as dependent as the rest of the world on coal as a source of electricity for homes and industry. To my mind, this gives Australia a special responsibility to take definite action.
I certainly agree that much more should be done in developing renewable energy sources such as wind and solar power, and Australia has at times been a leader in these fields, but the fact is that these power sources are intermittent, and difficult to develop on a really large scale.
If we’re looking for a non-CO2-emitting energy source that can be harnessed on a large scale to replace fossil fuels, then – like it or not – nuclear energy is one of the few that meets these requirements, and Australia’s abundant stocks of uranium ore make a re-think even more imperative.

Có thể bạn khá ngạc nhiên khi khi biết rằng tôi, một người quan tâm bảo vệ môi trường, lại bênh vực cho cái điều mà cho đến nay không thể nghĩ ra được, nhưng bây giờ tôi đã trở nên thuyết phục rằng chúng ta cần mở lại cuộc tranh luận về năng lượng hạt nhân. Tôi đem việc này ra bởi vì rõ ràng là những nỗ lực quốc tế nhằm giới hạn khí thải nhà kính đã thất bại một cách kinh ngạc cả về mặt toàn cầu lẫn ở mức độ quốc gia như ở Úc, do đó cần có sự cởi mở cho những cách tiếp cận mới.
Tôi cũng nhận ra rằng hoạt động chống-hạt nhân ở Úc đã rất có ảnh hưởng trong việc làm cho các nhà máy năng lượng hạt nhân bị cấm bởi luật của chính phủ liên bang. Mặt khác, trong tất cả những quốc gia phát triển nhanh nhất về khí thải carbon dioxide theo đầu người lại đang diễn ra ở Úc, phần lớn bởi vì, so với phần còn lại của thế giới, thì nước Úc hầu như phụ thuộc gần như gấp hai lần vào than đá như là nguồn điện cho nhà ở và công nghiệp. Theo suy nghĩ của tôi, điều này đem lại cho nước Úc một trách nhiệm đặc biệt để hành động dứt khoát.
