When agency customers require me to use the new version and I don't have to upgrade my Windows XP and/or hardware.

I currently use Trados 2007 and MemoQ 3.6 (my default CAT tool is MemoQ).
I will switch shortly to MemoQ 4.2 because I am losing job opportunities (a few tens of thousands of words so far) with an agency customer that upgraded to 4.2 some time ago. Up to now I was able to dodge the upgrade and get work from other customers, but the need is pressing.

None of my customers has required Trados 2009 yet, so I stay with 2007.

I don't feel I lose much productivity not being up-to-date with these tools anyway, even though sometimes some killer features are really worth the upgrade.

As a matter of fact, I don't think I have ever upgraded without knowing beforehand that the investment would be worth it, ie that I would lose jobs if I didn't or that I would seriously increase my productivity.

Have a good weekend,
Philippe

I am anti-updating, being of the old-school "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" philosophy.
I use an old version of WF basic. It is simple to use and helps out me organise my texts better. I hate the new version though, which seems to be trying to emulate other TM programs...

I don't like Trados because of the price, apparent market hegemony and what I feel is its unnecessary complexity, although several of my colleagues use it quite happily.

My experience with other systems is limited. I am currently working with a client who uses Deja Vu, and I find it a tremendous waste of time (takes me about twice as long to translate with it as it would in WF) and I have serious doubts about the final quality of their "finished" texts as viewing the original texts in their context is often too time-consuming or difficult and I don't know what my drafts will look like by the time their "reviewers" are done with them.

We recently tried out Windows 7 OS, and after 3 days sent it back to the shop and changed to a MAC, because of incompatibilities with SW we already use. Office 2007 is a similar case in point...

I feel that "updates" are often rushed out without thorough testing for marketing purposes...

I also hate it when my webmail providers introduce "new features" which inevitably mean it takes me forever to find things that were fine as they were...

Wordfast Classic 5.90z1 has been just released. You can download and install the latest version of Wordfast Classic available at:
http://www.wordfast.net/index.php?whichpage=downloadpage

Wordfast Pro 2.4.0.1 has been just released. You can download and install the latest version of Wordfast Professional available at:
http://www.wordfast.com/store_download.html

All Wordfast updates are FREE during the license validity. We highly recommend updating "whenever there is a new (public) update" as Wordfast updates usually include improvements useful for real-world of translators.

Keeping the use of an older version should be for a clear reason. In such case, this reason should be reported to Wordfast either through the Yahoo groups or the contact form.

When it is outdated. Jul 24, 2010

Something I would like to mention:

Uprades should be discussed with your clients and regular editors beforehand. I once experienced a nasty situation when an editor sent back the proofread file in a newer version than delivered. Ah, the surprise! Neither the client's PM nor I could open the file. We just had to spend hours to download and to install new software in the middle of a rush job. Ouch...

Re. Wordfast updates Jul 25, 2010

I am still unhappy because when my old laptop had to be replaced, I was only able to get the latest version of wordfast, and it is not half as good as the older version. I wrote to wordfast, Yasmin Moslem, in fact, but she was not able to solve the problem or give me access to the version I used to have. I really don't understand why wordfast bothered to upgrade.
