Although sometimes I'll carry on in the evening, but I try to avoid it!

But late finishes don't necessarily equate to overworking, as many of us in Mediterranean climes will down tools for a couple of hours after lunch.

And since I start after most people have gone to sleep, I too am finished before most people...
...that is, before most people finish work, start work, or wake up for that matter!
Standard working hours:
Start: 10 pm - Midnite (try to start earlier, but most night don't get really going til Midnite.
Finish: 8 am - Noon

The question itself is a nice illustration how often people with "normal" circadian habits happily assume that everyone is roughly the same, give or take a couple of hours. While this is obviously untrue, I have an impression that it's *especially* untrue among translators and other freelancers. My own biological clock is set to have a peak of productivity around 8 pm, and 2-3 am seems to be the right time to finish and go to bed. Because I have to fit in full time working hours around my daughter's busy school and after-school activity timetable, which means I do not generally do much work between 3:00 and 9:00, and find it impossible to concentrate solidly for the six hours that she is at school without taking a break for lunch, dog walking, house chores, etc.

.... I start around 5 and finish around 2pm. So I can spend the afternoon with my kids, at least until they get into the horrendous Spanish school system.

It is not uncommon for me to work all day while my daughter is at school, then take some time off when she gets home at 4pm until after dinner, then get back into the office and work until I can't think (sometimes as late as 2am).
Also, during the summer, I will get up early and work until 2 or 3pm, then take the rest of the afternoon off to go for a walk/cycling/skating with her, and, again, get back to work after dinner.
Of course, when I have less work, I work less.

It really varies greatly. Sometimes I might be done before 5pm, especially if I go out for the evening and am therefore "unable" to spend the evening in front of the computer. But if I have work to do, I may work well into the evening. Urgent jobs have sometimes kept me up until 3am and later, but that wouldn't be a typical time for me to call it a day!

It seems like I almost always have someone who needs to be somewhere (two teenage kids) around 4 pm or otherwise need my attention in the afternoon, so I usually finish up my major stretch of work by that time. I'll often come back and finish things up if I need to between 8 pm and 10 pm, though.

Sometimes I try to work in the daytime, but the most convenient hours for me - from 10-11pm to 5-6am, when my children are asleep. Now they are both at home, the senior son will go to school soon, and I hope that I'll have some time to work during the day.

I am also inclined to put in a few hours in the morning, but ususually does not start before 9am. (Before that time the brain is still a bit foggy) I continue until 11am, and then it is time for preparing lunch for my husband.
I like to have an early lunch and then take a nice 30 minutes nap afterwards. From 3-5pm usually at the desk again, but if it is a nice day, I like to take a walk from 4-5.
