I’m working towards it, but I want more interesting and better paid work before I'm there. Basically I want to progress from the fairly lowbrow journalism and business texts I currently translate to the more highbrow journalism, literature and academic writing. And for twice the price.
But I do often think how lucky I am to be doing something I genuinely enjoy; even the most mundane business texts can be fascinating from a linguistic point of view. And being my own boss is priceless.

Due to a perk, free flights in the cockpit of mainly MD11s, I found my passion: Flying. Unfortunately an ATPL at Oxford aviation costs 75000 euro. In the States, you have to replace this by $. Still a lot of money.
Now, I am too old for this.

...I suppose it's the difference between a "dream" and a "goal". My dream was always to be on the West End stage and once I realised this was unlikely, I made being a freelance translator my goal. Funnily enough though, I do this every day and I love it most days. I think I'd only want to be on the West End for one night, just to say I'd done it.

I quite agree with Simon. It's great to be your own boss, it's wonderful to work in a field (linguistics) I love but not all of the texts I translate are as fascinating as I would like to have them. But then, I can work on that

It was my dream, but it's not a job. I don't have a job, I have been working on my own for over 26 years and that's how I like it.
Now I can be retired and still work.

My problem? Too many dreams.. or dream jobs. However, this is certainly one of them, and I'm enjoying it (I agree with Simon and Anja though), together with teaching - another fulfilled dream (problem my number 1 dream job). I'm not working as a teacher right now, but I'll soon get back to it.
And I'm working on the others

As a youngster, I had a dream of being engaged in creative jobs like a painter. So I never would have envisioned my present self. Now I am content to stay in my present job, because I am available to support talented people from the behind. I can help my clients to achieve their goals. In some ways I guess, perhaps, I could translate my dream into reality! Meanwhile I inch forward toward my own dream. In dreams there are no impossibilities:)

I've never been happier, career-wise, but there are a few things that keep my job from being perfect:
- Having to compete with colleagues willing to work for very low rates. I lose out on projects that I would really like to do. This isn't my imagination - potential clients often tell me that they would love to hire me but can't afford what I charge.
- Having to accept work that I really don't want to do.

I had 2 dreams when I was at the university: to become a teacher and to become a translator.
I became 2003 a teacher, then I earned a master's degree in translation thanks to a "paid vacation" from my administration.
And now I'm both. I'm happy and richer than ever (well, it all depends on one's conception of richness...)
