starch whitewash

Something to that effect.

Starch or cornstarch used in whitewash - for walls, fences etc.

Distemper — or whitewash — was the paint most commonly used from the12th century until well into our own
times. Being made from chalk or lime, it was freely available and very cheap. It could easily be coloured and it provided a
suitable light-reflecting surface for inside walls, as well as protection against the elements for the exteriors. There were
several recipes: whiting bound with size, preferably starch because it did not impair the colour; alternatively, slaked
lime mixed with powdered alum instead of size or starch, or ‘stucco whitewash’ made from chalk lime slaked in boiling
water and mixed with ground rice.

Do you have a simple recipe for whitewash? I want to paint my fence.
If you crush and superheat any calcium-rich mineral such as limestone, grind it fine and mix it with water, it will heat up into a caustic alkaline soup that will stick to practically anything and quickly firm up in any shape. As it cools, it loses its chemical burning characteristic and cures into a hard, dense material. Mixed with whiting (while clay, corn starch or wheat flour) and/or sand, gravel or rocks, this is the basis of plaster of Paris, stucco, concrete and long-lasting, exterior-grade whitewash.
