I need to make use of your collective imagination and genius once again. I have a bunch of ideas that are working for the rest of the phrase, but not the above expression, though I know it's referring to his job (articled clerk in a lawyer's office: he's a young law graduate). He is talking to a girl who studied with him who he hasn't seen for years (they fall in love).
Thanks in advance.
Seasons greetings and happy holidays!

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: ""Always making a case for myself". Love the double meaning in this one. Brilliant. Thanks everyone: great explanations of the term and some wonderful suggestions for translations. Much appreciated. Best wishes for the festive season. :)"

always with a chip on my shoulder
