Spanish term

esta enorme masa en movimiento

Spanish to English Social Sciences Government / Politics Argentina
This is from a speech by Juan Perón. I'm getting bugged by the repeated use of "esta masa" -- "this mass" sounds like a growth! So, I'm wondering if others might have some better ideas for expressing this?

Diariamente iremos incorporando a esta enorme masa en movimiento a todos los díscolos y descontentos, para que, junto con nosotros, se confundan en esta masa hermosa y patriota que constituyen ustedes

Patricia Rosas (asker) Mar 2, 2010:
on "movimiento" I just realized that later in the speech, Perón uses "movimientos obreros" to refer to protests (not the overall "workers movement" that is behind the demonstrations). I can't find any support for translating movimiento as protest, but I think he is telegraphing the idea of workers protesting/demonstrating against the government in power (he is out of power) when he says "masa en movimiento" (fwiw!).
Lisa McCarthy Mar 2, 2010:
oops, forgot about 'en movimiento'! - I'll get back to you on that :-)
Patricia Rosas (asker) Mar 2, 2010:
Hi, Lisa! I'd stuck "multitude" in brackets in places, so I like your answer! He is speaking in front of the cabildo in Buenos Aires in 1945, before an audience of mostly workers. This was just after he was arrested and then released following mass protests. Any suggestions for the "en movimiento" part (this enormous multitude in motion?)? THX!!
Lisa McCarthy Mar 2, 2010:
Hi Patricia Where exactly is Perón and who is he addressing?

To be honest, I'm not really sure what exactly he means to say by this 'en movimiento', but here's a couple of ideas:

Maybe "Restless multitude" in light of new context.

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thanks to everyone for their thoughts. Gilla was very perceptive for hitting on "mass movement" -- I think he was telegraphing that idea. But Lisa came up with "restless multitude and the client and I both liked that. So, pts. to Lisa!"

this vast movement of people / this huge wave of movement

It seems to me that this is a movement of people.. there are lots of ways of expressing it, with waves or tides joining simply "Movement".

this huge multitude in action

I think "mass" would really be more accurate, but "multitude" in action might also work.
Example sentence:

I can see a huge multitude filling the horizon

this huge wave of people

"wave" conveys the meaning "en movimiento"
"masa" refers to people

this huge multitude on the move

although I think later in your text you should overcome your reluctance to use "mass".

agree Muriel Vasconcellos : Yes, and I think 'on the move' is important.

this mass movement

Coming to this rather late, but I think you could use this expression here. It uses mass adjectivally and movement as the noun, which departs from the original construction but is a standard term in English for this meaning in politics.

"Mass movement refers to the political concept of a political party or movement which is supported by large segments of a population."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mass_movement

"We could never call on a mass movement to support us in getting health care reform, because who can really get excited over a PO that won’t produce universal coverage?"

"Stop the War: The Story of Britain’s Biggest Mass Movement.
Their book tells a story about a 'remarkable mass movement' which the authors hope 'can change the face of politics for a generation."
