Antes de proponer esta pieza, pensé en el espíritu de este tipo de paseo, en el significado clásico de eje cívico… que debería ser el de recuperar la calle, entrar en contacto, punto de encuentro, reuniones distendidas y todo eso.

An artist talking about urban development of Palma de Mallorca. At this point he is discussing a sculpture he made for a public space which was being regenerated and pedestrianized. I am unsure of how to translate "distendidas" in this context: I am a bit thrown by the use of the term here.

Noni and the meetings in streets in Palma The idea of meeting up with friends etc is spot on. What has happened is that so far one street – with another in the throes of everlasting roadworks (or reconstruction!)- has been pedestrianised , so all the existing bars and restaurants, plus a number of new ones, have put tables out in what used to be an impassably car ridden street, so providing ideal places for what you are describing.

I always tend to think of it as cordial, as in cordial relations, but here that doesn't work of course!

If the reunión is taking place in the street, it's hardly going to be a meeting is it. Hence the idea of gatherings etc - meeting up with your friends?

And then I'm giving you a range of adjectives, from the positively old-fashioned (but could be tongue in cheek?) to the rather more recent tone.

OK, that's probably enough for kick-off....

agree James A. Walsh : "Casual get-togethers" would do it for me. // I did spot Christian's "casual", but it was the "get-togethers" bit that I was agreeing with more here, because of the surrounding context (which mentions "encuentro").

I don't see why not, Noni. I take the phrase to refer to lengthy, drawn out "tertulias", rather than fun-filled jollity sessions. I quite like your 'unhurried' for example. To my mind there's nothing wrong in using a word in a transalation, even if it sounds a bit 'literal' if it's a word I would use myself anyway!
