Annie E (asker) Aug 27, 2014:
Thanks to all of you for suggestions. Regards.
Peter Guest Sep 16, 2013:
Charles previous... un buque fondeado means anchored, never moored, which is amarrado. The idea of acoderar is usually to turn the vessel's head to the waves or to prevent the stern swinging into the fairway in resticted roads or canals. Codera is spring, the definition of which is a rope taken to the anchor rode, buoy or dock to ensure.... Spring is also now used for ropes taken from the bow and stern to prevent the vessel moving longitudinally when moored.
Neil Ashby Sep 16, 2013:
Check out Charles' previous explanation taken from ... DRAE:
"acoderar" means "Presentar en determinada dirección el costado de un buque fondeado, valiéndose de coderas" (DRAE), and a "codera" is a "Cabo grueso con que se amarra el buque, por la popa, a otra embarcación, a una boya o a tierra, para mantenerlo presentando el costado en determinada dirección" (DRAE).

So "acoderar" means to secure a ship at anchor to a dock, a buoy or another ship with a "codera", a heavy line commonly kwown as a hawser. The normal verb for this in English is to moor:

You would need to do research on your term in other context to understand the meaning.
They could mean angle of approach.
I can find nothing with "berthing at an angle".
Annie E (asker) Sep 16, 2013:
They are moored to a dock/berthed - does it mean that they are moored at right-angles or "at an angle". I can't figure out if "acodar" in this context is a technical term or whether it just means moored "alongside".

Proposed translations

lie at an angle

Acoderar in castillian spanish means to use a codera or spring to ensure a vessel lies in a determined direction.
This may be an anchor spring, from a dolphin or it may be a shore line. Your text does not make it clear whether the vessels are actually moored to a dock, buoys or anchored.

accomodate, to moor, to dock

I think "accomodate" makes a good alternative in the three examples that you provide.

Maybe its a bit of a typo or an alternative spelling, see http://www.proz.com/kudoz/spanish_to_english/ships_sailing_m...
Example sentence:

“La terminal de Corozal tendría capacidad de cerca de 4 millones de TEU`s cuando esté terminada. La primera fase incluye la mayoría del muelle, que tendría la capacidad para acodar hasta cinco buques, y esa fase da para 2,9 millones de TEU`s

neutral liz askew : "accomModate"/no it is just a comment re the spelling

Has the typo anything to do with the 'neutral'? Or is there some reasoning? ;)

Cause – failure to understand berthing requirements. The angle of approach to the jetty was too shallow; contact is likely when trying to *****berth at a shallow angle***.

so why not "berthing at an angle"
