I'm confused about how to translate "di mezzo" here. would "in part" be accurate?
In terzo luogo, la Cina c’entra perché i modelli di sviluppo delle due economie sono assolutamente diversi. L’impero ***di mezzo*** ha fondato la sua crescita sull’industria manifatturiera, sulla capacità di attrarre investimenti dall’estero, su stimoli che arrivano dal centro e si diffondono nel Paese, nelle diverse regioni in via di sviluppo.

I don't think this is any reference to an ancient name. It would seem to refer to China's economy. It imports semi manufactured goods from poorer regions in Indonesia and India which it assembles and then exports to richer western countries, the Empire in between.

: if you read the phrase in context, it really is using 'Middle Empire. "L’impero ***di mezzo*** ha fondato la sua crescita". stylistic thingie to avoid repeating the word China. imho.

Maybe the author is doing both things. I immediately saw in economic terms, cos of Ch's half-way-there economy and the heavily economic context.
