Libby Zion was a freshmen at Bennington College when she died at the age of 18 on March 5, 1984. Ms Zion sought care in the emergency depratement at Cornell Medical Center in New York City. She presented with a temperture of 103.5 and died 8 hours after being admitted. Other presenting symptoms were agitation, "srange jerking motion" of her body, and a bout of disorientation. Libby had a history of depression and had been prescribed the MAOI phenlzine. The emergency room physicians were unable to diagnose her condition definitivelyk but they admitted her for hydration and observation. Her death was caused by a combination of meperidine(Demerol) and the MAOI. The doctor who prescribed the meperidine was an intern. Because of this tragedy, graduate medical education was scrutinized and then criticized for the long hours intern and resident physicians were expected to work. In defense of these physicians, it must be said that the concept of a serotonin syndrome was very new, with the term not being coined until the early eighties.
