This book, The Purposeful Universe, is meant to serve two somewhat different purposes. On the one hand, this book presents a theory to be scrutinized and critiqued by the pro-fessional scientific community. A proposal for a new theory of biological evolution as an alternative to Darwinism re-quires that supporting evidence from many different fields be provided in some detail. On the other hand, this theory is intended for seekers of the truth who do not have any formal scientific training. Since the substance of this theory addresses some of the most significant questions all human beings raise at one point or another in their lives—such as Who am I?, Why am I here?, and Where do I come from?—I also hope that the information imparted will serve a broader audience.
This material has not been published in peer-reviewed articles because the theory needs to be presented in its entirety for the sake of clarity. If parts of it are removed from the overall context, this theory would probably appear so completely outside the ruling paradigm of science that no peer reviewer would be able to understand it. As I hope to demonstrate, a theory about biological evolution that holds together, and does not in the final analysis look upon life as an accident, requires a very broad perspective, one that includes Mayan cosmology as an indispensable part. This new theory about the evolution of the universe in fact spans so many fields that no professional scientist, and I am no exception to this myself, can have firsthand knowledge of all the fields that need to be covered for its development. This also means that many well-read nonprofessional scientists are as well equipped to study and evaluate this theory as someone who has a scientific degree in just one of its specialized fields. Consequently, I think this book should be accessible to a fairly broad audience. Meaningful science is never overly complicated, and a true theory should be clear enough that it is accessible to just about everyone with a strong interest. I think we have now come to a point where the closing words of Stephen Hawking in A Brief History of Time may apply:
If, however, we were to discover such a complete theory, its general principles should be so simple as to be under-stood by everyone, not just a few scientists. Then we shall all, philosophers, scientists, and just ordinary people, be able to take part in the discussion of the question of why it is that we and the universe exist. If we find the answer to that, it would be the ultimate triumph of human reason—for then we would know the mind of God.1
It is exactly this kind of discussion that I would like to see result from the study of the theory presented, and in conse-quence I have decided to leave it up to all readers to decide for themselves, or among themselves, whether this new the-ory of evolution makes sense and is useful for them in pon-dering the big questions of life.
I should point out that this book contains the original the-ory; this is not a book popularizing a theory that has been developed somewhere else. Despite the amount of detail that is included, I think that generally the arguments are easy to follow and the math is elementary. I hope with this book to directly share the excitement of the development of a new scientific theory and the methodical detective work that is needed to verify it. I also encourage a critical reading when it comes to the facts and logic presented. While intuition is very important for developing a new theory, I feel that intuition by itself is of little value if it cannot be verified by facts and logic.
To some, the title of the book may seem controversial and its focus, biological evolution, even more so, as this has been the center of a hard-fought battle between religious creationism and Darwinism for 150 years, a struggle that has probably even intensified in the past decade. The purpose of this book is to propose a resolution to this conflict through a theory that brings our understanding to a higher level from which our perspective can be unified. As it turns out, with this theory both sides in the protracted conflict actually get to be right in very fundamental ways, which incidentally may be completely unsuspected even by their protagonists. Yet to arrive at such a unified model, it is necessary to criticize earlier ideas that by necessity serve as our points of departure. Thus I spend some time explaining the theory of Darwinism in its current form, which is what dominates the scientific environment, along with the big bang theory, which explains the beginning of the universe. These make up the creation story that is embraced by the modern educational system. It is therefore an urgent matter to find out if these theories are true or if the facts that they are based on can more favorably be looked upon in an entirely different way. I spend much less time criticizing Young Earth Creationism, not because I embrace it, but because it ignores empirical evidence to an extent that such a discussion would not seem meaningful.
Hence, the present book is primarily a scientific theory about the basic nature of the universe and its evolution, es-pecially pertaining to physics and biology, and so it deals mainly with the history of the cosmos—where we come from. It does not directly address the question of what will happen in the years and months leading up to 2011 and af-ter—where we are going. My understanding of the history of humankind and its future has however already been dis-cussed quite extensively in two previous books: Solving the Greatest Mystery of Our Time: The Mayan Calendar and The Mayan Calendar and the Transformation of Consciousness.2 These two books complement the present one. Nonetheless, I think that this new book is instrumental for readers who want to understand the current situation of humanity. For me, a discussion of the future of humanity based on the Mayan calendar has always required proof that this calendar is accurate, that it can be used to match events in history or biology with the passage of time. I do feel the present book adds crucial evidence that the true Mayan calendar, with nine Underworlds and thirteen Heav-ens, is useful for understanding evolution, and I believe this is necessary for a meaningful understanding also of the fu-ture. Especially when the media are defering all their inter-est on the meaningless date of December 21, 2012, it seems all the more important to provide information concerning what the true Mayan calendar tells us about ourselves and the purpose of the universe.
In a sense this book is the third in a trilogy that with the two mentioned above develops a complete theory about the evolution of the universe. While it might have seemed natu-ral to start this trilogy with the evolution of the physical uni-verse and biological species and move on to human history, the books have if anything been going in the opposite direc-tion. Hence, this trilogy ends with the current book, with its more basic analysis of the nature of the universe. The main reason that the scientific book about physical biology comes last is that it is only in light of some recent discoveries in the scientific literature that it seems possible to develop a coher-ent theory of evolution without large gaps and unfounded assumptions. This third book is in my own mind the deepest and most powerful for understanding the nature of the pur-poseful universe that we are part of, and hopefully it will also help readers to complete their own pictures of where they come from and where they are meant to be going.
The Purposeful Universe has nine chapters, and I would like to briefly outline the contents of these here. The three first chapters are all essentially introductory ones presenting background on universal cosmology, the nature of time, and biological evolution. They highlight not only the current state of knowledge and the positions of some schools of thinking in these areas, but also a few findings that are es-pecially important for a new start. Chapter 4 presents results that favor a new theory of evolution, the Tree of Life theory, which is the central focus of this book. It corresponds to the “Results” section of a scientific article and presents the underlying facts and data that support the new theory of biological evolution. Chapter 5 offers information on physical cosmology, combined with a new interpretation of quantum theory consistent with the view that we are indeed living in a universe that is intelligently designed and fine-tuned for life. Chapters 6, 7, and 8 present different aspects of the new theory of biological evolution. Chapter 6 discusses why the universe evolves in the first place as a function of the shifting quantum states of the Cosmic Tree of Life and shows how lower galactic and planetary levels evolve because of their entanglement with this phenome-non. It focuses on the place of biological evolution in the larger context of geology and astronomy. Chapter 7 explains the origin and evolution of life on the biochemical level, while the actual cellular mechanism of biological evolution is described in chapter 8. Chapter 9 discusses some of the wider existential ramifications of the new theory of biological evolution. These took me somewhat by surprise, and the consequences have turned out to be much more far-reaching and exciting than I had anticipated when I started writing this book.
This is not a self-help book that tells anyone his or her own personal purpose or makes recommendations about how to live their lives. Yet I think it is impossible for anyone to come to clarity about their individual purposes without knowing that the universe we live in is purposeful and has a direction that our own lives may be part of. The existence of purposefulness to the universe has been denied by modern science, and in demonstrating this purpose, it has been necessary to break some of its rules. Instead of saying that the universe lacks a direction, which is the current scientific norm, I advocate a return to the philosophy of some of science’s early pioneers, who did not avoid addressing the great questions of life and its origin. Yet, for the very reason that I have broken certain taboos, I feel the theory has become much more encompassing and meaningful than it would otherwise. It now tells us more about the beauty and intelligence of this creation and will hopefully allow more people to experience the beauty of the process of scientific discovery as well.

Den här boken, Vårt Intelligenta Universum, är tänkt att fungera i två olika sammanhang. Å ena sidan presenterar den en ny teori om biologisk evolution som ett alternativ till darwinismen, redo att granskas och kritiseras av vetenskapsvärlden. En sådan presentation kräver stödjande och detaljrika bevis från många olika områden. Å andra sidan är boken menad för de som söker sanningen och som inte har någon vetenskaplig utbildning. Eftersom teorin tar upp några av de största frågorna som alla människor någon gång har ställt sig – Vem är jag? Varför är jag här? Var kommer jag ifrån? – så hoppas jag också att informationen kommer att tjäna en bredare publik.
Materialet har aldrig publicerats i vetenskapliga artiklar eftersom teorin behöver presenteras i sin helhet för att kunna utvärderas. Om delar av teorin lyfts ut ur sitt sammanhang kan den ge intryck av att stå så helt utanför det rådande vetenskapliga paradigmet att expertgranskare förmodligen skulle ha svårt att förstå den. Jag presenterar alltså en fullständig teori om den biologiska evolutionen som inte ser livet som en slump. Det kräver ett mycket brett perspektiv där mayakosmologin ingår som en oumbärlig del. Denna nya teori om universums utveckling rör sig över så många områden att ingen professionell forskare, mig själv inräknad, skulle kunna ha förstahandskunskap om alla de områden som berörs. Det här betyder att många pålästa ickeprofessionella kan vara lika väl rustade att studera och utvärdera teorin som någon som har en vetenskaplig examen i endast ett specialämne. Därför är min förhoppning att boken ska kunna förstås av en bred publik. Meningsfull vetenskap är aldrig extremt komplicerad och en sann teori bör vara så tydlig att alla som är intresserade i princip ska kunna förstå den. Det här är något som Stephen Hawking har formulerat i sin bok Kosmos – En kort historik (A brief history of time):
Om vi däremot skulle upptäcka en sådan komplett teori så skulle de allmänna principerna vara så enkla att alla skulle förstå dem, inte bara några få forskare. Då kommer vi alla – filosofer, forskare och vanliga människor – att ha möjlighet att ta del i diskussionerna som handlar om varför vi och universum existerar. Om vi hittar svaret skulle det innebära den ultimata triumfen för det mänskliga förståndet, för då skulle vi förstå Guds tankar.1
Det är exakt den här typen av diskussioner som jag skulle vilja se som resultat av boken och teorin. Som en konsekvens har jag beslutat att lämna över till läsaren att avgöra, ensam eller tillsammans med andra, om denna nya evolutionsteori är vettig och användbar när de funderar över de stora frågorna i livet.
Jag vill poängtera att boken innehåller teorin i sin originalutformning. Det är alltså inte en bok som populariserar en teori som har utvecklats någon annanstans. Trots antalet detaljer så tror jag att argumenten generellt är enkla att följa och att matematiken som används är elementär. Med den här boken hoppas jag kunna dela med mig av den spänning som det har inneburit att utveckla en ny vetenskaplig teori och det metodiska detektivarbete som krävs för att verifiera den. Jag uppmanar till ett kritiskt läsande när det gäller fakta och logik. Även om intuitionen är viktig vid utvecklandet av en ny teori så anser jag att den saknar värde om den inte kan verifieras av just fakta och logik.
För vissa kan bokens titel och fokus, den biologiska evolutionen, upplevas som kontroversiella. Inte minst eftersom ämnet har stått i centrum för en hård kamp mellan religiös kreationism och darwinism i 150 år – en kamp som förmodligen har intensifierats ytterligare under det senaste årtiondet. Syftet med boken är att presentera en lösning på konflikten med hjälp av en teori som skapar en högre förståelse där båda perspektiven kan förenas. Med den här teorin får båda parter i den långdragna konflikten i grunden rätt, något som även kan komma att förvåna förkämparna. För att nå fram till en förenande modell är det nödvändigt att kritisera tidigare idéer och därför är det naturligt att ha dem som utgångspunkt. Jag kommer att förklara darwinismens teoribildning i sin nuvarande form eftersom den har en så dominerande ställning inom dagens vetenskap. Jag berättar också om big bang-teorin eftersom den beskriver vårt universums födelse. Tillsammans bildar de den skapelseberättelse som lärs ut inom dagens utbildningssystem, och det är därför viktigt att ta reda på om teorierna är riktiga och om det vore bättre att se dessa grundläggande fakta ur en helt annan vinkel. Jag kommer däremot inte att ägna mycket tid till att kritisera den bokstavliga kreationismen. Inte för att den tilltalar mig, utan för att den ignorerar empiriska bevis till en sådan grad att en sådan diskussion inte skulle vara meningsfull.
I första hand är denna bok en vetenskaplig teori som förklarar vårt universums grundläggande natur och evolution, med fysik och biologi som bas. Fokus ligger därför på kosmos historia – var vi kommer ifrån. Den tar inte direkt upp frågor om vad som kommer att hända under den tid som är kvar till år 2011 och därefter – vart vi är på väg. Djupare redogörelser för människans historia och framtid har jag redan presenterat i två tidigare böcker: Solving the greatest mystery of our time – The Mayan Calendar (som inte har getts ut på svenska) och Mayakalendern – Mänsklighetens väg mot ett upplyst medvetande.2 Båda fungerar som instrument för dem som vill förstå mänsklighetens nuvarande situation och är ett bra komplement till denna bok. För mig har en diskussion om framtiden som baseras på mayakalendern alltid krävt prov på att den är rätt och riktig – att den matchar händelser inom historia och biologi ända från början av universums uppkomst till nutid. Jag upplever att den här boken ger avgörande bevis för att mayakalendern, med sina nio undervärldar och tretton himlar, är användbar för att förstå evolutionen. Jag tror också att sådana bevis är nödvändiga för en meningsfull förståelse av framtiden. Det känns extra viktigt att ge en bild av vad kalendern faktiskt berättar om oss och universums syfte eftersom media tyvärr lägger allt intresse på datumet 21:a december år 2012, ett datum som saknar koppling till kalenderns faktiska energiskiften.
På sätt och vis är den här boken alltså en del av en trilogi där de två tidigare nämnda böckerna ingår och som tillsammans utvecklar en teori om universums evolution. Det hade kanske varit naturligare att börja trilogin med utvecklingen av det fysiska kosmoset och dess biologiska arter för att sedan avsluta med människans historia. Istället har böckerna gått i omvänd ordning och trilogin avslutas nu med den här boken som innehåller en mer grundläggande analys av universums natur. Det främsta skälet är att det först nu, sedan år 2005, finns upptäckter beskrivna inom den vetenskapliga litteraturen som gör det möjligt att skapa en sammanhängande evolutionsteori utan stora gap och ogrundade antaganden. Jag hoppas att den kan hjälpa dig som läsare att skapa en komplett bild av var du kommer ifrån och vart du är menad att gå.
Vårt Intelligenta Universum består av nio kapitel och jag vill kort beskriva innehållet i dessa här. De tre första kapitlen ger en introduktion och presenterar bakgrunden till universell kosmologi, tidens natur och biologisk evolution. De ger en översikt över den nuvarande kunskapen och ståndpunkterna för några av de gällande tankebanorna inom området, samt några upptäckter som är speciellt viktiga för framtiden. Kapitel 2 presenterar också preliminära resultat som talar för en ny teori om evolutionen, Livets träd-teorin, som är det centrala fokuset för den här boken. Kapitel 4 motsvarar resultatdelen i en vetenskaplig artikel och presenterar grundläggande fakta och data som ger stöd till teorin. Kapitel 5 ger information om fysikalisk kosmologi, kombinerat med en ny tolkning av kvantteorin som stämmer överens med tanken att vi verkligen lever i ett universum som är fininställt för liv. Kapitel 6, 7 och 8 presenterar sedan olika perspektiv på teorin. Kapitel 6 diskuterar varför universum utvecklas som en funktion av de skiftande kvanttillstånden i det kosmiska livsträdet och visar hur de lägre galaktiska och planetära systemnivåerna utvecklas genom deras sammanflätning med detta fenomen. Kapitlet fokuserar på geologi och astronomi och den biologiska evolutionens plats i det här större sammanhanget. Kapitel 7 förklarar uppkomsten och utvecklingen av liv på biokemisk nivå, medan den cellulära mekanismen för biologisk evolution förklaras i kapitel 8. Kapitel 9 diskuterar några av de existentiella konsekvenserna av teorin. Jag blev själv förvånad över resultat eftersom de visade sig vara mer omfattande och spännande än vad jag kunde ana när jag började arbetet med boken.
Det här är inte en självhjälpsbok som berättar för människor vilket syfte deras individuella liv har, eller som ger rekommendationer om hur man ska leva. Däremot tror jag att det är omöjligt att komma till klarhet om sitt eget syfte utan att vara medveten om att det universum som vi lever i också har ett syfte, och att det dessutom har en riktning som våra liv kan vara en del av. Den moderna vetenskapen förnekar oftast att det finns en högre mening med vårt universum. För att motbevisa detta har det varit nödvändigt att bryta mot några av dagens tabun. På så vis anser jag att teorin har blivit mer omfattande och meningsfull än om jag inte hade gjort det.
Istället för att hävda att universum saknar en riktning, vilket är den rådande vetenskapliga normen, så förespråkar jag att vi går tillbaka till den filosofi som en del av vetenskapens pionjärer upprätthöll och som tillät en meningsfull diskussion kring de stora och viktiga frågorna. En teori som tillåter detta skapar en större förståelse för universums skönhet och intelligens och ger förhoppningsvis fler människor möjlighet att uppleva själva skönheten i det vetenskapliga arbetet och de upptäckter som det leder till.
