Ninety miles to the north of the Venezuelan mainland, we find the most attractive reef complex in the Caribbean: Archipelago Los Roques, made up of forty two keys and over 250 sand banks. The transparent waters of the archipelago please our eyes with an unforgettable spectrum of blue hues. The fact that it is a coral reef barrier makes it the home of a sea fauna and flora that visitors can see and enjoy. Pelicans, barbels, guanaguanares, scissor-tails and a great number of other birds cross the intense blue sky of this heavenly place inhabited mainly by warm and hospitable fishermen. You will experience it yourself!

investigation reveals that this is not a recent burial. These are not resistance fighters executed by the Nazis or victims of a modern day genocide. No. These are the remains of an ancient people buried together and sealed in this chamber almost 2,000 years ago. But who were they? How did they die? And why were so many individuals buried in an unmarked mass grave and forgotten? The Vatican are determined to reveal the killer and their victims in this, the biggest archaeological whodunit of all time.

I had turned eighteen just days before but felt as if I’d never lived at all. Until then, I had always been quite still, watching events go by and interpreting the movie of my life as a mere procession in which I let myself be dragged around by everything that happened around me, as do the dry leaves of autumn, always being carried away by the wind in their lightness. I lived as if always waiting for something. From my perspective, everything seemed unstable and lacking clear contours. I lived in the Southern suburbs of Bari, in an ex commuter-residence area that was half middle, half working-class, among old buildings that all looked the same and some other, more recently built ones. The city was expanding and it had started to devour the countryside in a way that reminded me of that video game where Pac-Man ate up all the yellow dots to make way for himself. Our apartment was on the sixth floor of a condo located in one of the newer, more elegant residential areas: We had over 1000 square feet distributed in four rooms apart from the kitchen and two bathrooms. My room was at the end of a long hallway. To me, it was a bunker where I could take shelter every time I felt annoyed or wanted to be alone with my thoughts. It was a very luminous room filled with a merely illusory sense of order. The walls were still covered with photographs from my childhood, from when I smiled by the sea next to my parents, and with faded posters of Marco Van Basten and George Weah: Elegance and strength facing each other, as if in a challenge.
