Source text - English Any surgeon implanting penile prostheses should be familiar with the currently available techniques for measuring the patient, determining the implant size, and performing the surgery.
Improper surgical implantation of the prosthesis could result in unsatisfactory performance or require corrective surgery. Careful technique will minimize the possibility of erosion or perforation of the corpora cavernosa and urethra, and aid in preventing kinked tubing.
Reports in the literature suggest that prophylactic antibiotic treatment for dental procedures may be indicated for patients with a penile prosthesis.
Each device should be examined prior to surgery and continuously monitored throughout the surgical procedure to ensure the structural integrity of the device is not compromised in any way.
A prosthesis which has been damaged or on which repairs have been attempted should not be implanted. A prosthesis should not be implanted following any modifications to its original design. A standby prosthesis should be available at the time of surgery.
The prosthesis should not be handled with pointed, toothed or sharp-cornered instruments, as any nick can be the focus for subsequent failure of the implant. Extreme care should be taken in manipulating the prosthesis with blunt instruments to avoid tearing, warping or nicking.
