A história de Danilo Braz de Maciel é o retrato da situação da educação brasileira. O estudante levava duas horas para chegar ao Instituto Federal de Educação, Ciências e Tecnologia do Rio Grande do Norte (IFRN) para fazer suas atividades diárias. Ao chegar à biblioteca, os computadores não eram adequados para pesadas cargas e não tinham softwares específicos. O jeito era enfrentar fila para, com sorte, usar as máquinas do laboratório. Desse jeito, para formar-se em Tecnologia da Informação carregava um fardo maior do que deveria. Foi aí que entrou em cena a VMware, empresa de software e serviços para computação em nuvem e virtualização. Com suas soluções de Anywhere Workspace e um notebook, foi possível fazer com que Danilo Maciel tivesse acesso, de onde estivesse, aos equipamentos, arquivos e softwares do instituto. Assim o aluno pôde desempenhar suas tarefas e tornar-se um profissional de TI. Foi quebrada a barreira física e o ensino foi democratizado. É o retrato do poder da tecnologia na sociedade. "A VMware engaja as pessoas a liberarem seu potencial", disse o hoje sócio e engenheiro de software desenvolvedor na empresa GXtec, de Natal.
Ferramentas Anywhere Workspace é uma das cinco linhas de soluções que a VMware está focada em oferecer ao mercado brasileiro. As outras são multicloud, modernização de aplicações, segurança e infraestrutura para telecom. O objetivo é mostrar que a companhia americana – criada em 1998 para replicar servidores virtuais e evoluiu para entrega de data centers e redes – é muito mais do que um canal para virtualização, como ainda é vista por aqui. "Hoje conseguimos entregar transformação de negócios das organizações.Temos mostrado ao mercado local nossas credenciais", afirmou José Duarte, presidente da VMware no Brasil.
Outra meta estabelecida pelo executivo, que está na empresa há sete anos, três deles como comandante da operação brasileira, é fazer com que a receita seja sustentável. Até 2017, havia oscilação entre lucro e prejuízo. No último triênio, houve crescimento contínuo de dois dígitos ano a ano. “Temos crescido ano sobre ano, não só em números, mas em relevância no mercado de soluções”, disse Duarte.
CONTROLE A VMware tem a Dell Technologies como principal acionista, com 80,9% de participação. No maior negócio da história da tecnologia, a Dell Inc adquiriu em 2015 a EMC Corporation, incluindo sua participação na VMware, por US$ 67 bilhões. "Essa negociação não afetou agente. Claro que a Dell, como a maior detentora das ações, se tornou grande aliada. Mas temos autonomia, cotação na bolsa, governança própria, estratégia e conselho exclusivos", afirmou José Duarte.
Atualmente, as ofertas de processamento, nuvem, mobilidade, rede e segurança da empresa fornecem uma base digital para 500 mil clientes no mundo inteiro. Em 2016, a receita total foi de US$ 6,57 bilhões. O ano fiscal de 2021, encerrado em 31 de janeiro, fechou com US$ 11,8 bilhões, 9% superior sobre um ano antes e uma variação positiva de 88,2% em relação há cinco anos. O avanço nas vendas continua em bom ritmo. No primeiro trimestre do ano fiscal 2020, calculado até 30 de abril, o faturamento foi de US$ 2,99 bilhões, aumento de 9% sobre o mesmo período do ano anterior.
A perspectiva para o Brasil (para o presente e para o futuro) é otimista. Estamos no meio do ano e Duarte já afirma que será o melhor resultado da operação brasileira no fechamento do balanço, em janeiro. “Vamos crescer dois dígitos neste ano mesmo com muitas empresas em processos de contenção de investimentos. Orçamento para investir em TI existe e os executivos começaram a entender e dar a devida importância para esse tema”, disse o presidente, que está à frente de uma equipe de 200 colaboradores, o triplo de três anos atrás. “Tecnologia é ponte de conexão com o futuro. Quem não construir essa ponte vai ter problema.”
Há horizonte azul para novos negócios e para manutenção de contratos em curso, geralmente ampliados de tempos em tempos. No Brasil, o Banco Central também é cliente VMware. São utilizadas ferramentas que garantem estabilidade, segurança e capacidade operacional para habilitar o Pix. A arquitetura inclui VMware vRealize Operations, que permite o gerenciamento de operações automáticas de TI, a plataforma VMware vSphere, hipervisor instalado diretamente no servidor físico do banco, e o VMware NSX, que protege e preserva os dados de todas as transações. Na área de telecomunicações, a TIM Brasil fez com VMware o deslocamento de todo seu call center para home office, no início da pandemia, em março de 2020. A gigante italiana também fez toda parte de virtualização de rede.

Já a consultoria IDC colocou a VMware como líder em três avaliações no início de 2021: Worldwide Unified Endpoint Management Software; Worldwide Unified Endpoint Management Software for Apple Devices; e Worldwide Unified Endpoint Management Software for Ruggedized/Internet of Things Deployment.

The story of Danilo Braz de Maciel is the portrait of the current state of education in Brazil. To engage his daily activities as a student, it took two hours to get to the Federal Institute of Education, Science, and Technology of Rio Grande do Norte (IFRN). On arriving at the library, the computers were not suitable for processing heavy loads and not installed with specific software. The only way out for him was to stand in the line and, with luck, use the machines available in the laboratory. As a result, he had to bear a heavier burden than he should have in order to pursue his degree in Information Technology. That was when VMware, a software and services company for cloud computing and virtualization, came into play. With the Anywhere Workspace solutions and a notebook, Danilo Maciel was able to access the institute's equipment, files, and software from wherever he wanted. This enabled the student to perform his tasks and become an IT professional. The physical barrier had been broken down and education became more democratic, thus portraying the power of technology in society. “VMware empowers people to unleash their potential,” said the partner and software engineer developer at GXtec, based in Natal.
Anywhere Workspace is one of the five solution lines that VMware is focused on offering to the Brazilian market. The others are related to multicloud, application modernization, security, and telecom infrastructure. The goal is to show that the American company – created in 1998 to replicate virtual servers and then evolve to deliver data centers and networks – is much more than a channel for virtualization, as it is still seen here. “Today, we are able to deliver business transformation for organizations. The local market already knows our credentials,” said José Duarte, VMware Brasil’s president.
Another goal set by the executive, who has been working at the company for seven years, including three years as head of Brazilian operations, is to develop sustainable revenue. Profits and losses oscillated until the close of 2017 and, since then, year-on-year double digit growth has followed. “We have grown year-on-year, not only in numbers, but in relevance in the solutions market,” says Duarte.
CONTROL Dell Technologies is the controlling VMware shareholder, with 80.9% company interest. In 2015, in the biggest deal in technology history, Dell Inc acquired the EMC Corporation, including its VMware shares, for US$ 67 billion. “This deal did not affect us. Naturally, Dell, as the largest shareholder, became a great ally. But we do have autonomy and a stock exchange listing, as well as our own governance, strategy, and exclusive boards,” said José Duarte.
Today, the company provides offers including processing, cloud, mobility, networking, and security solutions to a digital base of 500,000 customers worldwide. In 2016, total revenue was US$ 6.57 billion. Total revenue for fiscal year 2021, ending on January 31, was US$ 11.8 billion, a 9% increase over the previous year, and a positive variation of 88.2% over the last 5 years. There is budget to invest in IT, and executives have begun to understand and give this topic its due importance,” said the president, who leads a team of 200 employees that has tripled in size during the past three years. “Technology is the bridge that connects us to the future. Anyone not building that bridge will have problems.”
There is a blue horizon for new business and for maintaining ongoing contracts, which are usually extended from time to time. In Brazil, the Central Bank is also a VMware customer that uses tools to ensure the stability, security, and operational capability enabling Pix. The architecture includes VMware vRealize Operations, which enables the automated IT operations management, the VMware vSphere platform, a hypervisor installed directly on the bank's physical server, and VMware NSX, which protects and preserves the data of all transactions. In the telecommunications field, TIM Brasil partnered with VMware to move its entire call center to home offices when the pandemic started, in March 2020. The Italian corporate giant also implemented the entire network virtualization project.
