Text sursă - engleză The mountain gorilla (Gorilla beringei beringei) is one of the two most endangered apes in the world. There are only approximately 655 mountain gorillas alive today, and all of them are found in the wild. They only exist in two small, protected mountain forest patches in northwest Rwanda, southwest Uganda and eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). In Rwanda the population inhabits the Virunga Volcanic Region. The threats to the mountain gorillas, and their habitat are many. Poaching, pressure on the land for agriculture, unsustainable harvesting of wood, construction and other human activities all threaten the habitat of the gorillas. Furthermore, humans are potentially a source of disease that, once transmitted to gorillas, could devastate the population.

De nos jours, on dénombre environ 655 gorilles des montagnes, tous vivent en liberté. Les populations de gorilles des montagne se concentrent uniquement dans deux petites parcelles de forêts montagneuses protégées au nord-ouest du Rwanda, au sud-ouest de l’Uganda et à l’est de la République Démocratique du Congo (RDC).
