See more Dear Fellow Translators, Recently, one of our fellow translators, Funda Uncu, has been taken into custody with regard to a book she has translated into Turkish. You may find the public announcement made by ÇEVBİR, the Literary Translators Society, below. For Turkish speakers, you may find the original text at http://www.cevbir.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=294:cevbir-kamuoyu-duyurusu. Public Announcement by Çevbir Our fellow translator, Funda Uncu, has been remanded in custody for hours at Bodrum Police Station on the grounds that her testimony would be taken for the investigation of obscenity in Chuck Palahniuk’s novel “Snuff”, which had been translated into Turkish with the title “Ölüm Pornosu”, and has been subject to harassment with degrading statements. Translation is a profession that is conducted with really hard living conditions in our country. It is an unacceptable situation for those, who are rational and conscientious, that a translator, who fulfills her duty of translating a work, which is created in another language, into our own language in a professional manner, is subject to a treatment as if she has committed a crime in accordance with an outdated legislation due to her activities, which are considered within the framework of art and science, is brought by force to police stations, prosecution offices, court halls and even jails. Apart from these actions, which are a clear violation of the universal principles of law, arbitrary treatments to the translator, offenses to her professional and sexual identity with degrading statements are exactly a scandal. We, hereby, strongly condemn this maltreatment to our fellow translator, Funda Uncu, and invite the officers, who are obliged to enforce the laws, to act respectfully to the human dignity and the government to act responsibly. ▲ Collapse | | | Mats Wiman スウェーデン Local time: 18:14 2000に入会 ドイツ語 から スウェーデン語 + ... 追悼 This is an outrage!! | Jun 21, 2011 |
It is totally illogical and morally very disturbing that anyone who translates a text can be condemned or worse, be taken into custody or even arrested because s/he only executes his/her profession which is nothing more than converting a text from one language into another. Translating is a neutral activity and does not imply any commitment to the content of the text. I would gladly sign any appeal organised by someone who can. Mats Wiman PS. We have ... We have discussed extensively if ProZ.com could act in this matter, but it was decided some years ago that it is up to us as individual translators to take a stand, not ProZ.com.

There was in fact an earlier thread about this, but unfortunately it quickly got beyond the scope of this site. It was too political and most, if not all, of the posts were removed by staff. I agree that it is an outrage, but as ProZ.com cannot take action, please support the Facebook cause or other protests instead. Here you are only 'preaching to those already converted' anyway! | | | To report site rules violations or get help, contact a site moderator: You can also contact site staff by submitting a support request » Turkish Translator Detained for Her Work Trados Business Manager Lite | Create customer quotes and invoices from within Trados Studio
