An agency is demanding I quote a large translation job by Japanese Source character. The amount of US$0.04/文字 has been suggested, but that seems to understate normal community rates quoted per English target word (assumed to be between $0.10-$0.17).
Does any feel comfortable sharing their per source character rates, or making any suggestings on how to calculate them?
Thank you!

On average, the calculation uses a 2.5 multiplier. That is, if you have a 2500 Japanese character source text, you will end up woth approx. 1000 English words. This slightly varies by field, for example, if you have a lot of katakana words in the source, that will result in less English words. But in general, the 2.5 multiplier is useful. So, in that sense, the US$0.04/source Japanese character is equivalent of US$0.10/target English word.
