Hello all!

I am thinking of applying to a conference interpreting school sometime within the next two years. As such, I really need my Spanish to be at the best its ever been. I'm giving myself this time to prepare my Spanish and French as well as keep up with my Italian which is already at a C2 level. I'm giving myself this time to prepare my Spanish and French as well as keep up with my Italian which is already at a C2 level. I need to familiarize myself with extremely formal, bureaucratic and otherwise "political" language which up until now I have only been able to familiarize myself with in a cursory way.

Do you know of any resources (both online and in print) where I may read/see examples of very highbrow Spanish? What is the Spanish language publication equivalent to something like the New York Times or the Wall Street Journal?

In Chile you can find 2 good examples: Diario El Mercurio which has a high level of language an Diario Financiero. You can find them in www.elmercuio.cl and www.financiero.cl

This is a list of Spanish language newspapers that I often come across while browsing the web. They are also printed in their respective countries and some of them are distributed overseas:

1) El País (Spain) http://elpais.com
El País published a style guide that is recommended by the IOL for Dip Trans candidates, so this newspaper is certainly a role model for writing.

This is a list of Spanish language newspapers that I often come across while browsing the web. They are also printed in their respective countries and some of them are distributed overseas:

1) El País (Spain) http://elpais.com
El País published a style guide that is recommended by the IOL for Dip Trans candidates, so this newspaper is certainly a role model for writing.

2) El Mundo (Spain) http://www.elmundo.es
Another role model for writing. In the website of El Mundo there is a thesaurus and a dictionary that I often use.

3) El Clarín (Argentina) http://www.clarin.com
4) La Nación (Argentina) http://www.lanacion.com.ar
5) El Mercurio (Chile) http://www.emol.com
^^The only newspapers from South America that I read regularly. Just be careful with the business/financial jargon and the legalese, it's often different from the rest of Latin America and the U.S.

6) El Nuevo Herald (U.S.) www.elnuevoherald.com
Excellent newspaper. But I would read their articles about the Cuban regime or the Cuban exile with a grain of salt.

7) The Wall Street Journal Americas (U.S.) http://online.wsj.com/public/page/espanol-inicio.html
Their articles are also published by newspapers in many Latin American countries.

I like reading the above magazine, although it is of course not general, it's kind of the Spanish equivalent of 'The Economist'. I don't tend to agree with all the points of view espoused but I find the writing in it very high quality. I have also noticed that sometimes they have columns translated from The Economist and I like seeing those translations and comparing them with the original article.

Do you know of any website for Spanish documentaries/newscasts/podcasts? I know I can google this, but I was wondering about any that you all as professionals particularly like.

You can watch the news, either live or archived. You can also watch a programme called 'salvados' which is a fantastic investigation journalism programme where you can find out about current affairs and issues in Spain. I think this will help with interpreting.
