What does the above mean in English in the following context? I don't know what is missing where you see the ellipse (...), but the words in quotes are apparently what the police said to the two women, according to their testimony.
Dos lesbianas fueron víctimas de una detención arbitraria. Demoradas horas por la policía, llevadas a la comisaría “para que eligieran un hombre ... habiendo tantos cómo van a estar entre ustedes”.

I think the officers are trying to intimidate the women with what they are planning to do at the police station (pair each one up with a man) -- i.e. their dialogue refers to the future -- rather than asking the women a rhetorical question about how they ended up together -- dialogue referring back to the past.
