Translate in Wenlin??? Apr 28, 2007

Hi David,

I use Wenlin too, but I didn't know we can work in Wenlin itself. Most of the time, I use List >Words by Pinyin to find the English translation for the Chinese term.

You can just type in Wenlin Apr 29, 2007

Well, you can physically type in Wenlin looking at the running vocabulary at the bottom. It is not a CAT tool, but it does have a phenomenal vocabulary behind it.

I don't think you can connect Wenlin and Trados Apr 29, 2007

Hi David,
I use Wenlin, too. I usually open the source in word, connect to Workbench and copy each sentence to Wenlin. While checking the meaning of the words in Wenlin, I type then in the open translation unit in word. This way you can simultaneously create a TM. I don't know if you can connect both programs, but that would be great!

One more question about Wenlin Apr 29, 2007

Do you think there is a file in Wenlin that you can export into Trados? I don't know... maybe some sort of a txt file.

One more question about Wenlin: is it possible to make new entries in Wenlin?

You can edit some Wenlin entries May 2, 2007

You can edit the entries and change the translations, but I don't think you can add new entries. It seems that Inga's suggestion was the best one, but requires a bit of faffing about, so maybe it doesn't save that much time in the long run. However, there are some phrases, like "Chinese President Hu Jintao" that if I could automate the translation of would save me quite a bit of time.

Trados May 2, 2007

I haven't been asked to work in, is it TTX, files or whatever Trados files are called, but I have decided that working as a translator does not extend to helping translation companies build up their databases of translated phrases.... so CAT tools are simply for me, if I can get them to work, something to help me... and nothing to do with, and none of the business of, any clients.

Trados May 2, 2007

Hi David,

I thought of using Trados for this project we are working on (yes, we are working for the same client), but it is not feasible because we have Chinese and English texts in the same document.

Consolidating files May 2, 2007

Well, our client did not request the use of Trados, so if you really decide to use it, you don't have to send her the TM.

At first, I consolidated all files into one and used the "find" function in WORD to find the term I need (e.g. name of the Iraqi Defense Minister). Unfortunately, the file became too huge in the end...

I need to work out how to use Trados first May 2, 2007

I had it on my computer, and after a few hours of playing, I wiped it off, because I couldn't work out how to use it. Someone said you need a week to play around with it and I would like to find some spare time sometime to just see how useful it can be...

Trados May 2, 2007

Hi David,

I don't think I use Trados on more than five projects a year. Almost half of my source documents are in jpeg and PDF formats, hence I cannot use Trados. Furthermore, it is not really practical for me to use Trados because most of my projects do not exceed 15,000 characters. In fact, I feel that it slows me down.
