Korean to English: Ten summers in Seoul, and counting General field: Other
Source text - Korean The long road to the university brings back many a familiar sight. Arriving at the campus, located north of the river, I am always taken by the natural beauty. Located on the steep hillside, dotted with lots of trees and walking pathways, the campus has quality of being a serene oasis in an otherwise bustling city.
Another friend with whom I getting in touch made is a young fashion designer in whose shop I accidently stopped many years ago. We spoke of Korean fashion and this and that… …. I am no longer certain how the friendship began, but as with most friendships we recognized our kindred spirits early on and despite our age differences we connected well. Her early experiences in New York as a student has made her more open to foreigners and has given her language skills that has made our communication easy. We meet each year, and she shows me her fashions, we catch up on her new stores and businesses (she is very entrepreneurial, like many Korean designers, who not only design their fashions, but also market them and sell them). While if still gives me enormous pleasure to make small purchases from her store, our friendship now includes dinners, visits to museums and enjoying the new found coffee culture in exquisite cafes all around Seoul. Her recent purchase of a bright red SMART car means I get to zip around town with her and explore cafes and restaurants further a field in hidden corners of the vast and sprawling metropolis.
Translation - English

Source text - Korean Coming each year at the same time provides an excellent opportunity to observe changes in the city and its inhabitants. In a fast-changing economy, such as Korea, this is particularly evident in little tings like how people dress, to what is available in shops to larger events such as institutions and civic action. In our earlier days, there was much more conformity in how people dressed. All girls, with the exception of the very young and old, for example, wore high heels. And, this did not matter where we encountered them. From city pavements to hiking paths on the mountain to beaches, high heels were ubiquitous. I could only wonder how they managed. Always polite, well groomed and well mannered, did their high heels not make them uncomfortable, I often wondered? I tried on many Korean shoes in my quest to discover the high heels that would be comfortable, but of no avail. I wondered if the architecture of the Korean foot was different, or if they were more stoic…. I quickly returned to my unfashionable flats.
