Introduction
For the last 18 months, until the Jadis DA-7 Luxe came into my life, my reference amplifier was its predecessor, the Jadis Defy 7 (pronounced, according to French-Canadian Jadis distributor Pierre Gabriel, zha’-dis deh-fee’ set). My particular used model, a Defy 7 Mk. II manufactured ca. 1993, arrived by way of Harry Pearson’s former assistant, Scot Markwell. Keenly aware of my sonic preferences, familiarity with live music, living situation constraints, and bank account, I considered the amplifier a near-ideal match and a bargain to boot.
Initially extolled in the audiophile press by the inimitable Jonathan Scull, the Defy 7 possessed one of the most impressive midranges around. The sound was warm, full, and musical to the core. Thanks at least partially to its hefty power transformer, which grew even larger with the Mk. III, it also had excellent bass. If the unit’s overly dominant midrange, to some extent a product of the Svetlana C 6550 power tubes everyone recommended for it, was not balanced by ultimate high-end extension, the amps’ sonic signature was intentional. Jadis had designed the amp to sound good with a variety of sources, including the lower resolution CD players of the late 1980s and early 1990s.
After going through four design iterations, the highest being the Mk. IV, the Defy 7 morphed into the DA-7 Luxe in 2004. This a considerably different amplifier from the original product, with a different circuit board, different capacitors and resistors, and a larger center power transformer that matches the size of the two flanking output transformers. Even the gold plate on the front of the amp has been upgraded to match the look of the other units in the Jadis line. The DA-7 also offers the first opportunity to use KT-88 tubes with the amp.
Originally distributed by Fanfare International and then Northstar Leading the Way, the Defy 7 was without a U.S. distributor for far too many years. Finally, toward the end of 2004, longtime Jadis expert Pierre Gabriel of Québec gained the rights to U.S. distribution.
Within one month of learning that Jadis was returning to the U.S., I was on the phone with Pierre. We finally met face-to-face at CES 2005, a month before the DA-7 Luxe arrived at my doorstep for review. It has since replaced the Defy 7 Mk. II as my reference amplifier.
The Design
The DA-7 Luxe only accepts single-ended (RCA-terminated) interconnects, and offers two sets of speaker outputs per channel. While one can always place a single-ended adapter on balanced cables, my experience is that even the most expensive XLR to single-ended adapters, manufactured by Purist, compromise sound quality. If your preamp of choice only has balanced outputs, this may not be the best amplifier for you.
The 100W Class A/B push-pull DA-7 uses power transformers and output transformers handmade by Jadis in France. Twenty-one years of development went into the design of the output transformer.
While the amp is very heavy, it consumes much less juice (approx. 240W) and runs considerably cooler than comparable 100W Class A stereo amplifiers. Regardless of the supposed superiority of pure Class A electronics, the reality is that a 100W pure Class A stereo amplifier can consume upwards of 400W at idle and run extremely hot.
In my former living situation - a top 3rd floor apartment in which I kept windows shut so that my music would not disturb the neighbors - I found 100W of pure Class A amplification unbearable in the warmer months. Even when sitting naked in the living room - I am not exaggerating - there was a period of several weeks during which my amp raised the temperature into the high 80s, making extended listening impossible. Throughout the two warmest months of summer, I could only listen early in the day while wearing next to nothing. Neither I nor the hanging plants wanted to spend a second summer with that amp.
In marked contrast, I have found the cooler Jadis Defy 7 and its DA-7 Luxe successor a breath of fresh air in more ways than one. Even with 12 power tubes, it puts out much less heat than my former Bruce Moore 100W Dual Mono amp and consumes less than half the current. It also sounds considerably better.
Tube Choices
The DA-7 can accommodate a wide range of power tubes. You can choose KT-88, EL-34, 6550, 6CA7, and KT-90 power tubes from a variety of manufacturers depending upon personal preference.
Pierre Gabriel prefers KT-88 tubes custom manufactured for Jadis by JJ. These are not merely JJ’s standard KT-88 tubes that cost more because they carry the Jadis logo; rather, they were specifically designed for the DA-7, and took two years to develop. These tubes, which I use in my DA-7, cost double the price of the Electro-Harmonix KT-88s I used in my old Bruce Moore Dual mono amp.
Pierre likens the sound of Jadis’ KT-88s to a mixture of the sound of three other tubes.
“They have the natural sound of the 34, the punch of the 6550, and the speed and high frequency of the KT-90,” he claims. “The Jadis KT-88 combines the best of each tube.”
The amp also comes equipped with two Electro-Harmonix ECC 82s for the input stage and four Electro-Harmonix ECC 83s for the transmission stage. Although E-H Russian tubes are readily available, they are neither the tubes for which the amp was initially designed, nor the best choice one can make.
After spending several months experimenting with different input and transmission stage tubes, I can state without equivocation that until you find the right combination of ECC 82s and ECC 83s to complement your choice of power tubes, you will have only a partial idea of how good the DA-7 Luxe can sound.
I initially approached tubing the DA-7 with the same strategy I employed with the Defy 7 Mk. II. I kept the four stock E-H ECC 83 transmission tubes in place, and changed the two E-H ECC 82 input tubes to the German NOS (New Old Stock) RFTs supplied with the Mk. II by Scot Markwell. The sound gained enormous body, so enormous that the midrange seemed overemphasized and exaggerated. In addition the sound was overly sweet, even syrupy, and monotonous to boot. What works well with the Defy 7 Mk. II equipped with 12 Svetlana C 6550 power tubes does not necessarily sound good in a DA-7 Luxe equipped with Jadis KT-88s.
Following Pierre’s counsel, I have since learned that the choice of ECC 83s is as important as the choice of ECC 82s. You need to change all six tubes if you want this amp to sound like a million bucks.
I confess that I have neither the time nor resources to conduct an exhaustive audition of NOS tubes. A month of tube rolling, which consumed so much time that I am way behind in my reviews, was enough. But auditioning NOS RFTs, RCA ECC82 equivalents, Telefunken ECC 82s, and JAN Philips 5814As leads me to choose the latter (Pierre’s recommended input stage tube) by a long shot.
The same goes for Pierre’s choice of ECC 83s for the transmission stage. I initially mistook his recommendation of four GE 5751 JANs to mean four JAN Philips 5751s. Not a good move. Paired with the JAN Philips 5814 input tubes, JAN Philips 5751s were not a good transmission tube match for the Jadis KT-88s.
After I put out a call to my fellow audiophiles for reliable tube sources, Ori Mizrahi-Shalom of the Bay Area Audiophile Society (manufacturer of the just released Oritek interconnects I have yet to audition) offered me four NOS GE 5-Star 5751s. Again, I mistakenly thought that these were the tubes that Pierre recommends.
What did I hear? Tons of air, tons and tons of air, in fact an artificial preponderance of air with the image set very far back in the soundstage. Great bass extension, a large amount of lower bass information (albeit somewhat muffled and distorted), and a lack of brilliance on high rendered the tubes fascinating to listen to but less than ideal.
Next, Oakland’s incredible fount of audio and jazz information known as David Tonelli informed me that while ECC 83, 12AX7, and 7025 tubes all have a gain of 100, 5751 tubes have a gain of 70. Perhaps, I thought, the lower gain of the GE 5 Star 5751s was the source of my dissatisfaction.
David then went to his stash of NOS tubes and, much to our mutual surprise, pulled out four never played GE 5-Star 7025s. These, I was certain, would bring me the sound I desired.
Not quite. If the GE 5751s emphasized the midrange and below to the exclusion of high frequency extension, the GE 7025s favored highs over everything else. They were lovely sounding on top - warm, sweet, lush and far more forward than their sisters. But where were the lower midrange, bass, and air to balance their highs out? Pretty non-existent, as far as I could tell, at least when mated with the other tubes in the amp.
After weeks of experimentation, I arrived at the following choice of tubes:
● Two JAN Philips 5814As for the input stage
● Two GE 5-Star 5751s in the left socket in each channel (looking from the front to the rear over the transformers) of the transmission stage
● Two GE 5-Star 7025s, one positioned to the right of each 5751, for the remaining two transmission stage tubes
This configuration offers a decent amount of high extension, a huge amount of air, good detail, and a warm, slightly romantic presentation. If you reverse the order of the 5751s and 7025s, you get more bass at the expense of high extension.
Finally, again seemingly by accident, Brian Cheney of VMPS told me about a local retail source for NOS tubes. A visit uncovered four NOS GE 5751 JANs. These tubes sound nothing like either the GE 5-Star 5751s or GE 5-Star 7025s. I now know why Pierre Gabriel prefers the combination of:
● Two JAN Philips 5814As for the input stage
● Four GE 5751JANs for the transmission stage
Note that there is yet a third combination of tubes worthy of audition:
● Two JAN Philips 5814As for the input stage
● Two GE 5-Star 5751s in the left socket and two GE 5751JANs in the right socket of each channel’s transmission stage
And that’s of course only taking into consideration the limited number of NOS tube choices I tried.
I have more to say about choice of input and transmission tubes in the listening section that follows. For now, please keep in mind that the sound of NOS tubes changes greatly after you clean corrosion off the pins. Following David Tonelli's suggestion, I first used a thin, soft pencil eraser refill, cylindrically shaped with a diameter small enough to push over one tube pin at a time. I carefully pushed the eraser onto each pin, twisted it around, removed it, and then moved on to the next pin. By the time I had finished with the four GE 5751 JANs, both ends of the eraser were filled with black-marked holes. Then I carefully cleaned the pins with Caig De-Oxit, making sure not to leave excess residue behind. This greatly affected the sound of the tubes, removing much of an objectionable edge that turns out to have been distortion. All to the better.

Jadis DA-7 Luxe 100W Stereo Tube Amplifier

Biasing the Power Tubes
As with all power amplifiers that are not self-biasing, hand biasing the twelve power tubes is essential for optimal performance. Jadis recommends that you bias the power tubes anywhere between 4 and 5 volts. Pierre has even experimented with biasing to 6 and higher.
Choosing the right bias for your musical taste is essential to getting the best from the DA-7. In my experience, the higher the bias, the richer the sound. But higher bias also means that tubes run hotter and burn out faster. It can also produce sound overly rich and full, to they extent that the amp begins to sound too sweet, warm, thick, or even syrupy (depending upon your choice of tubes).
It would be very nice if Jadis had made biasing the DA-7’s twelve power tubes as simple as adjusting twelve individual settings on the top of the amp and reading the results via a built-in gauge. No such luck. Instead, Jadis’ diminutive bias adjustment screws are located inside the amp. You must turn off the amp, remove the protective tube cage on top, turn the amp on its side, remove the 9 screws that hold the bottom plate in place and get the plate out of the way before the bias adjustments become visible.
Once you turn the amp over, expose the adjustment screws, and turn the amp back on until it stabilizes, you must work with four adjustment screws, one for each row of three tubes, rather than twelve screws, one for each tube. Jadis forces you to bias an entire row of three tubes at a time. And while the screws are easy to turn, the tiniest movement can make a big difference in bias.
Given that no two power tubes measure exactly alike, and that bias requires readjustment as tubes age (differently), you must bias the three tubes in a given row to an average level, and recalibrate them every three or four months. To facilitate the process, you will find yourself mapping out the twelve tubes on a sheet of paper, writing down initial bias levels, and adjusting from there.
If you encounter a marked disparity in bias levels in a particular row of three tubes, you must then begin to swap tubes from row to row until the bias range in a particular row is as close as your particular assortment of twelve tubes allows. Assuming you don’t burn a hand or drop a tube in the process, getting it right can be fun. It’s a bit like a treasure hunt, and ideal for compulsive-obsessive personalities.
It’s an especial joy when you discover that the bias of an individual tube is to some extent dependent upon the bias of the other two tubes in its row. When you move a tube that measures 5.3 volt to another row, it may suddenly measure 4.6. Hence what initially looks like a good move may not prove efficacious.
Moving power tubes between sockets and rows is not as intellectually challenging as playing chess, but it does require attention and patience. Much experimentation is required to get your twelve tubes positioned optimally. You may even have to purchase new tubes after you discover that eight tubes are easily adjustable while the four others variously measure much higher or much lower than the others. This becomes more of an issue as tubes age.
Operating a voltmeter (I use a Radio Shack) to measure the bias is easy. You put one lead on the chassis, another on the end of one of the twelve fuses (one for each power tube) easily accessible inside the amp.
Warning. Turning the bias screws is fraught with danger. Brush against the wrong bit of metal with a metal screwdriver and you may be shocked blue by 500 Volts. This may help cure your schizophrenia, but at the cost of the hair on your head or, if you don’t have any . . . let’s not go there.
The trick is to use a plastic screwdriver to adjust bias. Touch the wrong thing, and no harm is done.
Not so fast. Finding a plastic screwdriver in this day and age may require another little treasure hunt. It seems Radio Shack no longer stocks plastic screwdrivers. Nor do major automotive tool distributors (at least in N. California).
I spent an entire afternoon searching for a plastic screwdriver. I went to carpet stores, auto parts stores, a locksmith, hardware stores, you name it. I tried everything short of driving 45 minutes each way to a computer chain outlet that couldn’t tell you what they stocked when you called them on the phone.
Finally, a local locksmith suggested I check out “the old guy in the TV repair shop across the street who keeps irregular hours.” Inside a virtual museum of television history, open for 60 years and stocked with more antiquated TV consoles than I wish to recount, stood a man well into his 80s who boasts that he still works 12 hours a day. Behind him, on his tool display, hung six long Zenith TV adjustment screwdrivers in their original packaging. One had a zip code for the Zenith address; one other was manufactured before zip codes came on the scene. I bought one of each size available. One fit the Jadis. I am still alive to tell the tale.
Models and Distribution
I briefly discussed the Jadis amplifier line with Pierre Gabriel. In his estimation, the next model up in quality from the DA-7 Luxe is the JA-30 30W Class A monoblocks. These also cost $10,500/pair. 30W pure class A usually sounds more powerful than 30W A/B, but it’s still 30W.
Then come the JA-80 80W Class A monoblocks, which are very different animals; rather than using a board, they are exclusively hard-wired and employ Jadis’ proprietary triple charge technology for even better sound. Thanks to dollar devaluation, they cost $18,500/pair US. I didn’t even ask the price of the 200W monoblocks that many favor.
Pierre also extolled the virtues of the Jadis DA-60 INOX-LUXE, a 60W per channel, Class A, auto bias, triple charge technology integrated amp that costs $10,500. I quote: “For an integrated, this is our ‘killer product.” I’ve put in my request for a future review.
As of this writing, Brooks Burdan Ltd. in Southern California has become the first in-state distributor of Jadis products. Four more U.S. dealers should be in place by the summer.
Authorized repairs and upgrades for older Jadis units in the United States are available from Ron Cox in Colorado (970-882-2530). Like Brooks Burdan, who carried Jadis for many years, Ron knows Jadis backwards and forwards and makes all repairs with Jadis parts. People on the East Coast can work with Jadis’ other knowledgeable authorized repair/upgrade person, Avis Brand (516-671-8310).
Internal Wiring
When I received my used Defy 7 Mk. II, Scot Markwell informed me that the wire to the speaker outputs, which runs much of the width of the chassis, had been upgraded to a Siltech silver harness. Scot explained that while Jadis stock wire was good, it has a soft, overtly romantic presentation that lacked tight focus and detail. The Siltech silver harness, in his opinion, made the presentation far more accurate and realistic.
Even though Pierre Gabriel states that Jadis’ present choice of internal wire is quite good, he offers a similar upgrade to the DA-7 using his own proprietary cabling. The upgrade can be performed on both the speaker outputs and the preamp (source) inputs. This is a Jadis-sanctioned upgrade. If anyone contacts Jadis in France requesting an internal wire upgrade, they are directed to Pierre who performs the service and installs his own cable.
Pierre explains that manufacturing his cable is far more complicated than simply removing silver wire from a roll and putting a shield around it. There are a large number of time-consuming steps involved.
My DA-7 came equipped with Pierre’s cable mod to the speaker outputs. While I have never heard the amp without the upgrade, I have every reason to accept what Scot and Pierre claim that the speaker output cable upgrade accomplishes. I do know for certain, after much experimentation with hook-up wire in my former Bruce Moore Companion III preamp and Michael Green Chameleon III speakers, that choice of hook-up wire makes a major difference in sound quality and resolution. Ask Mike Farnsworth of Talon Audio, who not only changed the hook-up wire in the Khorus X, but also its braiding configuration. I therefore have every reason to recommend the upgrade.
I look forward to the day when Pierre has enough extra hook-up cable available to send me his upgrade cable for the inputs. He claims this will result in a considerably more detailed presentation. This will be all for the better. While the DA-7’s resolution tops what I heard through the Defy 7 Mk. II, I have heard more throatiness on Terry Evans’ voice when listening through good solid-state amplification. My hunch is that the change of wire to the DA-7 inputs will greatly increase resolution.
The Sound
The Jadis DA-7 Luxe is among the best sounding amps I have yet auditioned in my home. I would not have devoted close to 3400 words (so far) to discussing how to get the ultimate sound from this amplifier if I did not find the effort worth it.
Last night I sat in rapt silence listening to the entire ECM disc of Chants, Hymns and Dances. The disc features improvisations on music by Gurdjieff and Tsabropoulos performed by Anja Lechner on cello and Vassilis Tsabropoulos on piano. The team is beautifully recorded, flattered by an extremely spacious, resonant acoustic of the kind heard on so many ECM recordings produced by Manfred Eicher.
With many of the amplifiers, speakers, and cabling I’ve auditioned, a lack of ultimate transparency encapsulates voices and instruments recorded in a resonant acoustic in a somewhat gray, whooish halo. No such issue listening to Chants, Hymns and Dances with the Jadis DA-7 equipped with Pierre Gabriel’s preferred tube complement. There’s a great deal of clarity and detail on top, accompanied by an extremely realistic sense of listening to two musicians situated in a large resonant space. The effect, given the trance-like nature of the music, is mesmerizing.
Listening to these artists’ improvisations on Gurdjieff’s music through the DA-7 gave me as direct a connection to the soul of music as I’ve experienced in my years of sonic exploration. It’s as though all those metal boxes and wires finally got out of the way, leaving me and the musicians alone in the room.
I of course auditioned two of my stand-bys, the opening of Rachmaninoff’s Symphonic Dances (Reference Recordings) and Canteloube’s Songs of the Auvergne as performed by Karina Gauvin and a chamber ensemble (CBC Records). With the GE 5751 JANs in the transmission stage, the sound is very crisp, full, and transparent. Bass is extremely tight, piccolos sing, the triangle glistens.
In my extremely live space, minimally treated due to the spousal acceptance factor, the GE 5751 JANs give highs a bright, slightly silvery quality (similar to what I heard in far greater abundance from the Parasound Halo JC 1 monoblocks) that some may find objectionable. There’s a similar brightness to David’s tenor voice when he practices his Church music in our dining room. For such listeners, the GE 5-Star 5571/7025 combo in the transmission stage, or even a GE 5-Star 5751/GE 5751 JAN combo, may prove more enjoyable.
At first I thought that bass sounded less full using four GE 5751 JANs rather than either tube combo mentioned above. This, I believe, is due in part to the speed of the GE 5751 JANs. The more romantic presentation of the 5-Star tubes adds a modicum of extra resonance to drums, double basses, and even cellos that is not always heard in live performance. The 5-Stars also soften the top a bit, so that the initial attack is not as fierce, and bathes the presentation in a most wonderful, romantic glow. It may not be exactly lifelike, but it sounds positively delicious.
While all three tube choices suggested above conveyed the complexity of Gauvin’s voice, the GE JANs made the sharp leading edge of the tone more apparent. The 5-Star combo put more emphasis on the sound beneath the edge. Some might say that the 5-Star combo is less detailed, softer, and more forgiving. But it’s also less crisp and transparent.
When it comes to truthfulness of presentation, we can only speak with certainty if we are intimately familiar with the acoustic environment in which a performance is recorded. All the tube choices offered so far are extremely satisfying musically. Choice will ultimately depend upon associated equipment, cabling, room configuration, and acoustics.
Listening to excerpts from the recent Telarc hybrid SACD release of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 with Donald Runnicles conducting the Atlanta Symphony proved another rewarding experience. (I played the recording in two-channel mode using the Theta Gen. VIII). Using the 5-Star combo in the DA-7, I played the final "Ode to Joy" to nine attendees at our recent potluck. It was so gratifying to watch everyone sitting with rapt attention.
Although a number of listeners commented on muddiness in the upper bass - a situation somewhat room dependent and far less noticeable with all GE 5751 JANs in place - I was most struck by the clarity and focus of voices and instruments. Even at loud volume, with instruments, soloists, and chorus going full blast, the DA-7 transmits information with enviable clarity, offering promise of energy to spare. And it sounds so beautiful!
As I reread this report, I wonder if some readers will somehow equate "beauty" with softness. Please don't. The slam on drums in Terry Evans' great Blues No More (Audioquest/JVC-XRCD), the sharpness of attack on the drums edge, the sizzle of the cymbals - all are as fast and realistic as it gets. If I were to distinguish between the Jadis DA-7 Luxe's speed of attack and that of the killer Parasound Halo JC-1 monoblocks, I would say, to use an analogy, the Jadis might leave you or your partner wanting more, while the Parasound's aggressiveness might be best described as "Slam, bam, thank you ma'am." A chacun son gout.
I have just revisited a marvelous, transportive recording of Himalayan singing bowls, Deuter's Tibet - Nada Himalaya 2 on New Earth Records. I first auditioned this disc on the excellent Red Planet Labs STR201 stereo amp. With the Jadis, the edge of attack on the high-pitched bells is extraordinarily clear. Overtones go on for days, blending into a mesmerizing sonic tapestry. Underneath those high sounds, lower gongs judiciously struck in the background extend way beyond and
above the speakers. Yes, it may be a sonically compromised Redbook CD, lacking the resolution of DVD-A and SACD. But the special qualities of these bells, which have been used for meditation and spiritual practice in India, Nepal, and Tibet for thousands of years, comes through virtually undiminished with Jadis amplification.
Diana Krall’s by now Verve classic When I Look in Your Eyes presented a wonderful smoky sultriness with the GE 5-Star 5751/7025 combo. Using all GE 5751 JANs revealed more of the artificially miked sound around Krall’s voice, and rendered accompaniment far more crisp and present. Both presentations were delicious in their own way. The combo of GE 5-Star 5751 and GE 5751 JAN, which I’m still experimenting with, may ultimately prove the most satisfying of the lot.
I guess I’m not finished with tube rolling after all.
Conclusions
The Jadis DA-7 Luxe is a wonderful-sounding amp. Its wealth of sonic beauty, openness, air, and power are matched by a frequency extension and sense of control often absent from tube gear. Offering the dual advantages of cooler, less power-consuming Class A/B operation, the Jadis DA-7 Luxe is a must-audition for anyone desiring hour after hour of gratifying listening.

Northstar leading the Way, Defy
Bruce Moore 100 Watt Dual Mono Amplifier.
Jadis DA-7 Luxe.
NOS (New Old Stock) RFT,

Airmotiv Loudspeakers: Music Runs in the Family
Your speakers are the single most important part of your audio system. It’s your speakers that connect you to your music; they’re the part that turns simple electricity into the emotional experience that is music. Really great speakers can make all the difference – and elevate an audio system that’s merely good into one that can deliver a truly transcendent listening experience. The Emotiva Airmotiv line represents the culmination of years of research and experience in producing both home and professional loudspeakers offering excellent technical performance and superb sound quality. Our Airmotiv speakers were designed from the start to be equally at home in an audiophile stereo system or a high-end home theater.
Airmotiv Subwoofers
Emotiva Airmotiv™ Subwoofers were designed to reproduce the lowest frequencies in the audio spectrum accurately and with exceptionally low distortion – even at the high listening levels in modern movies. It’s these important lowest octaves that make music sound real, and that bring the action in a well-recorded movie soundtrack right there into the room with you. Our Airmotiv Subwoofers deliver all the dynamics and raw power you need to make a modern movie soundtrack rattle the walls, but still offer the precision and superb musicality you need to get the most from audiophile quality music recordings. Adding an Airmotiv Subwoofer will take your music listening and home theater experience to the next level.
Our Airmotiv Subwoofers come in three models: the S10, the S12, and the S15. Each model includes a downward firing heavy duty high excursion powered bass driver; a front mounted performance matched high excursion passive radiator and a powerful audiophile quality Class A/B amplifier. The various models offer identical controls and features; the main difference is that the larger models have more power and can produce higher output levels, and their frequency response extends slightly lower. The cabinets are crafted of heavily braced acoustically inert HDF, with integral shock absorbing feet, and attractive removable sculpted fabric grills. The front bezels are finished with several coats of satin finish black lacquer, and the sides and rear are covered with durable yet attractive textured vinyl. Their futuristic but understated design aesthetic blends well with almost any decor. The full complement of controls and input connections are located conveniently out of sight on the rear panel, which also includes the high-efficiency heat sinks that provide cooling for the internal amplifiers.
Airmotiv S12
The Airmotiv S12 is the ideal way to extend the bass response of your audio system to cover the last few critical octaves of bass with authority and finesse. The Airmotiv S12 can deliver the raw power you need to add that final touch of realism to a movie, while still offering the low distortion and precise control you need for accurate, superb sounding music reproduction. The Airmotiv S12 delivers slightly less low bass extension than the S15, but is slightly more compact, and is ideal for smaller rooms.

8” POWERED AIRMOTIV™ STUDIO MONITORS BI-AMPLIFIED, 200 + 200 WATTS/CHANNEL
Overview
(Priced for one monitor, not sold in pairs.)
Focused on Exceptional Accuracy
Every Stealth monitor is the product of Emotiva Pro’s quest for ultimate accuracy. That’s why they’re specified at much higher levels than most monitors. Our frequency response, for instance, is specified to within +/- 1.75dB over the entire bandwidth of the monitor, rather than the more common +/- 3dB. In addition, every Emotiva Pro Stealth monitor is individually measured and calibrated at the factory to within 1dB of our reference standard. The result is a monitor you can trust to reveal all the most critical details, for your most intensive work.
Exclusive Transducers, Higher Performance
A large part of the Stealth line’s accuracy comes from our exclusive airmotiv™ high-frequency and low-frequency drivers. Each of these drivers, used only by Emotiva Pro, offers performance significantly greater than most conventional drivers.
Most high-frequency drivers move air by pushing it. There’s only one problem with that: output is limited by the mechanical properties of the diaphragm. As excursion increases, distortion jumps dramatically. Our airmotiv high-frequency driver moves air by compression—by literally squeezing it in-between the pleats in its folded diaphragm. The result is that smaller excursions are needed for the same output, which dramatically reduces distortion. You’ll hear it in the extreme clarity of the output, and the ability to handle large crescendos with aplomb.
Our airmotiv low-frequency driver provides the perfect complement to round out bass response. Curv™ woven polypropylene, combined with a rigid cast basket, copper pole, and aluminum shorting ring deliver the control and bass extension you need—in the case of the Stealth 8, down to 30 Hz. Many of our engineers use this speaker without a subwoofer!
Power to Spare
The best transducers in the world would mean nothing without exceptional power. That’s why every Stealth monitor is bi-amplified—separate power amplifiers for both high- and low-frequency drivers. Bi-amplification allows us to reach SPL levels much higher than single-amp systems for the same amount of power.
The Stealth 8, for example, offers two 200W amplifiers in each monitor, for a total power of 400W RMS per monitor, or 800W per pair. This power allows us to delivers 120dB nearfield peaks for handling your most dynamic works with headroom to spare.
Audiophile-Quality Parts
At the same time, our amps are not simply monsters of power. Each is a true audiophile reference, with fully discrete design, extensive use of surface-mount parts, precision resistors and film capacitors. The transformer is a custom toroid for exceptional efficiency. Take a look inside the Stealth series monitors, and you’d swear you’re looking inside a megabuck audiophile amp.
Precision Crafted Cabinetry
With the exceptional airmotiv™ drivers and audiophile amp sections, we needed a cabinet that would help us reach our goal of ultimate accuracy. This is how we created the Minimum Acoustic Signature cabinet, with a front panel CNC-milled from a solid 2″ block of HDF, extensively braced, and featuring Three-Phase internal damping. The result is a striking, angular front panel that minimizes diffraction, and a solid, acoustically inert assembly that helps the drivers perform their best.
The Control You Need
In our quest for accuracy, we know that every studio is different. Depending on monitor placement, size, and overall acoustic environment, control over both high and low frequency level may be needed. That’s why we included extensive contouring controls for both low and high frequencies. Low frequency tilt and cut can be adjusted, as well as high frequency tilt, over 5 discrete levels to achieve the perfect match with your environment.
“At the end of the day I find the Stealth 8 to have a very hi-fi, real world expensive speaker sound, and given the company’s history in the audiophile market, that is not surprising. Actually I think the Stealth line (and airmotiv line for that matter) may find just as much use in home theater setups as they will in studios.
In the end it comes down to learning a speaker in your own space and deciding if you think you can mix successfully on it or not, a process Emotiva makes easy. In the case of the Stealth Pro 8 it’s something I look forward to, as I am simply in love with how music sounds on them!”
