During the Easter Rising of 1916, James Joyce was part of an Irish Citizen
Army group which took over the usefully located Davy’s pub in central
Dublin:
The occupation by a ten-man ICA detachment of Davy’s pub overlooking Portobello
bridge (now the Portobello Hotel) had great potential. The seizure of the building, led
by one of Davy’s disgruntled cellarmen (felicitously named James Joyce), now
transformed into a proletarian fighter, is one of the emblematic revolutionary scenes
of the rising.1
According to Charles Townshend, ‘the garrison gave away its position by
firing on a lone officer, and soon came under heavy fire’.2 Meanwhile, the
more well-known James Joyce was in self-imposed exile in Zurich,
working on Ulysses. This exile was prone to be misunderstood. As
Dominic Manganiello has written (with reference to Finnegans Wake),
He could be accused … of cowardice, of being a ‘zürichschicken’ ... or a ‘chicken’
of Zürich, for not taking part either in the Easter Rebellion of 1916 or in the World
War. Instead, ‘without having struck one blow’, he ‘kuskykorked himself up tight in
his inkbattle house’, with his booze and writing materials, ‘hemiparalysed by the tong
warfare and all the shemozzle’.3
It is fairly unlikely that the writer knew about the activities of his
namesake since no comprehensive history of the Rising was available until
well after his death.4 However there is something fitting about this
anthroponymic connection, since Joyce himself was fascinated by
serendipity, coincidences, doubles, and duality. He was also captivated by
onomastics and superstitious about names.5
Joyce’s final text, Finnegans Wake, is structured around duality and it is
through doubling and repetition that Joyce creates his vision of an unreal
or essentially unchanging history, one which contains a number of fleeting
references to the Easter Rising. For W.B. Yeats, the Rising is conceived of
as an epochal, watershed event, and a portent of a new Ireland: ‘As yet one
knows nothing of the future except that it must be very unlike the past’.6
In his autobiography Yeats wrote that ‘the sudden certainty that Ireland
moving worlds 16.1 17In its revised and expanded version, Richard Ellmann’s biography of Joyce
is 744 pages long. Despite Joyce’s obsession with Irish affairs, Ellmann
dedicates only half of one of these pages to the Rising:
On Easter 1916, there occurred the Rising in Dublin. Among the executed leaders
was Patrick Pearse, for whom Joyce had no liking, either as a man or as his first teacher
of Irish; but at the same time came the wholly unnecessary death in April of Francis
Sheehy Skeffington, with whom he had published ‘The Day of the Rabblement’ in
1901. Skeffington, recklessly faithful to his pacifist views, was arrested while trying to
keep the Dublin poor from looting. A British officer, later judged guilty of murder but
insane, had shot him without trial. Joyce followed the events with pity; although he
evaluated the rising as useless, he also felt out of things.14
Ellmann’s unwillingness to dwell for long on Joyce and the Rising fits
into the early critical conception of Joyce – that of the detached and
largely apolitical aesthete. As do the following comments from another of
Joyce’s early interpreters, Hugh Kenner:
When the biscuit-tin, by heroic amplification, renders North Central Dublin a mass
of ruins we are to remember what patriotic idealism could claim to have accomplished
by Easter 1916. Thanks to a knot of hotheads with no prospect whatever of
accomplishing what they proposed, Dublin had been the first European capital to
undergo the bombardment of modern warfare, and James Joyce had little use for the
oratory that fuelled hotheadedness.15
However, over the past two decades, the old critical conception of Joyce
as a detached, apolitical writer has largely been abandoned. Works such as
Emer Nolan’s James Joyce and Nationalism (1995), Vincent Cheng’s Joyce,
Race and Empire (1995), Trevor Williams’ Reading Joyce Politically (1997)
and Andrew Gibson’s Joyce’s Revenge (2002) have been highly influential
in this regard.
Joyce had been living in Zurich since June 1915. While living in Trieste,
his previous home, he wrote and lectured on Irish political subjects, such
as the Home Rule bills, the fall of Parnell, and Fenianism. This nonfictional commentary on Irish politics ends before his move to Zurich and
the last political piece he wrote is an article entitled ‘Politics and Cattle
Disease’, published in September 1912 in the nationalist Freeman’s Journal.16
So there is no comment from Joyce on, for example, the 1913 Lockout.
Perhaps he sensed a less politically receptive audience in Switzerland than
he had enjoyed in Trieste. The presence of Trieste’s Irredentist movement
meant that his pieces on Ireland’s relationship with Britain – a matter
involving questions of nationality and the potential changing of political
structures – would always attract interest. Fairhall is of the view that Joyce’s
commitment to politics was on the wane as far back as 1907:
moving worlds 16.1 19
was to be like soft wax for years to come, was a moment of supernatural
insight’.7 In life and in art Yeats sought permanence and was preoccupied
by the transformation into permanence of forms susceptible to
deterioration, decay, and death. Despite his attraction to the idea of cyclical
history, flux or instability was anathema to Yeats. The ‘tattered coat’ or
‘dying animal’ of ‘Sailing to Byzantium’ is to be set into ‘hammered gold’
and the ‘artifice of eternity’.8Yeats’ acquisition of Thoor Ballylee in Co.
Galway is perhaps the most striking example of the poet’s longing for
forms of physical imperishability. For Yeats, the men of 1916 are not
simply dead, neither have they properly ceased to exist. They are changed.
Through their actions they have become solid and lasting monuments.
They have found ‘their heroic opposites’.9 But the ‘terrible beauty’ they
had wrought was also a transformed Ireland. For Joyce on the other hand
the only permanence in history is the process of transformation itself.
Furthermore, there is no sense in Joyce of a longing for lasting
constructions. Instead,Finnegans Wake delights in the perpetual rising and
falling of cities and civilizations. For Joyce, no event could ever be
considered isolated or unique. And, crucially, nothing is ever new.
An example of Joyce’s detached stance on contemporary events is his
somewhat resigned attitude to the carnage of the First World War: ‘if
someone mentioned a new atrocity to Joyce, he at once pointed out some
equally horrible old atrocity’.10 But this distancing is part of a larger trend
in Joyce’s thought and work – that of the accordance of past with present
or, as is the case in Finnegans Wake, the abolition of time itself: ‘In all his
books up to Finnegans Wake Joyce sought to reveal the coincidence of the
present with the past. Only in Finnegans Wake was he to carry his
convictions to its furthest reaches, by implying that there is no present
and no past’.11
As James Fairhall has noted, ‘except in elliptical allusions, [Joyce] appears
to have virtually ignored the Easter Rising, the Anglo-Irish War, and the
Irish Civil War – events which occurred during his prime and which
inspired Yeats, O’Casey, and other Irish writers’.12 Fairhall attributes this
disregard to an ambivalence towards Irish nationalism based on a
combination of ‘a political mythology inherited from his Parnellite father
... his “socialist” and pacifist beliefs ... and ... a need to establish his
independence not only of Irish nationalism but of any organized political
group, movement, or institution’.13These are all crucial factors contributing
to Joyce’s relative silence on 1916. However, in this essay I will consider
Joyce’s taciturn response to the Rising in terms of his thinking on history
itself and with regard to the techniques of Finnegans Wake.

let it be complete, full and definitive. But telling these Irish actors to hurry up, as our
fathers before us told them not so long ago, is useless. I, for one, am certain not to see
the curtain rise, as I shall have already taken the last tram home.25
Given Joyce’s prediction that the curtain would not rise in his lifetime –
one predicated on his conception of a paralysed nation – the events of the
period 1916 to 1922 must have come as something of a shock. A
combination of two issues lies behind Joyce’s muted responses to the
Easter Rising – his conception of history as essentially unchanging and
his experience of being blindsided by Irish political events. As Richard
Ellmann relates in James Joyce,
Balanced between bitterness and nostalgia, he declined an invitation from a woman
on the Journal de Genève, Fanny Guillermet, to write an analysis of the Irish events,
replying with some inaccuracy: ‘Je n’ècris jamais d’articles.’26
In the same letter Joyce writes that ‘le problème de ma race est tellement
compliqué qu’on a besoin de tous les moyens d’un art élastique pour l’esquisser—
sans le résoudre. Je suis de l’avis qu’une prononciation personelle ne m’est plus
permis. Je suis contraint à la fair moyennant les scènes et les personnages de ma
pauvre invention’.27
It is to that ‘pauvre invention’ we must turn for Joyce’s response to 1916.
Aside from upsetting Joyce’s conception of Ireland as a paralysed and
‘belated’ people, the Rising appears only briefly and obliquely in his works
for another reason. It is because, for him, no historical event could be
regarded as a detached or entirely unique occurrence.28 That said, there
are nevertheless moments in Ulysses (though set in 1904) and Finnegans
Wake (though set in a kind of unconscious time-void) which engage with
the event.29 Not surprisingly, the Rising is more of a presence in the Wake
as its own inherent symbolism fits with the thematic concerns of Joyce’s
final text. After all, the Wake is based on the story of the falling and rising
of Tim Finnegan which it transforms into the fall and eventual rise of its
central figure, HCE. Resurrection is as central a concern to Finnegans
Wake as it was to the leaders of the Rising. While the Wake is concerned
with the ‘resurrection’ from the death-like emptiness of sleep and the
scandal-caused fall of HCE, men like Pearse envisaged the ‘resurrection’
of a nation through a sacred blood sacrifice. According to Fairhall, the
word ‘Surrection’30‘conflates erection, insurrection, and resurrection, and
illustrates the key fact that “[t]he political, the religious, and the sexual
are always interrelated in Joyce”’.31
Identifications are never clear and distinct in the Wake – Shaun and
moving worlds 16.1 21
In March 1907 ... Joyce seemed to turn away from politics ... His mood of worldweariness undoubtedly contributed to his sudden professed dismissal of socialism; but,
even if his aboutface was not total, from this time on his interest in ‘isms’ of any kind
declined.17
However, it is not simply that Joyce was less interested in politics as the
second decade of the twentieth century moved on. The events of 1916
showed that Joyce had to some extent miscalculated the political climate
in Ireland, he had been slightly out of touch. As Fairhall has commented,
‘The “terrible beauty” of Easter 1916 was hardly the lacuna of paralysis
and demoralization depicted in Joyce’s fiction’.18 It is almost as if Joyce was
affronted by Ireland surprising him, not acting in accordance with the
diagnosis of ‘hemoplegia’ he had presented in Dubliners.19
While there is an absence of artistic material by Joyce based on the
events of 1916 and their wider significance, his statements on the larger
question of Irish independence have been reported. Taken together, these
create a somewhat complex and sometimes contradictory picture of
Joyce’s evolving thinking on the subject in the years leading to the
establishment of the Free State. In 1902 Joyce had asked his brother
Stanislaus as to ‘why you think I ought to change the conditions that gave
Ireland and me a shape and a destiny?’20 But by 1907 Joyce was arguing
with Stanislaus on the subject of Irish independence in the following
terms:
Stanislaus, always contentious, said that ... Ireland once free would be intolerable. ‘What
the devil are your politics?’ asked James. ‘Do you not think Ireland has a right to
govern itself and is capable of doing so?’21
And in 1918 Joyce discussed revolutionary violence:
Naturally I can’t approve of the act of the revolutionary who tosses a bomb in a theatre
to destroy the king and his children. On the other hand, have those states behaved any
better which have drowned the world in blood?22
Here we can see Joyce’s willingness to consider revolutionary violence in
a wider political and social context. Ellmann reports that Joyce was ‘briefly
exhilarated at the foundation of the Irish Free State’ in 1922.23
Joyce’s journalism and public statements are a different matter. In
‘Ireland: Island of Saints and Sages’, a lecture given at Trieste in April 1907,
he argues that ‘If a victorious country tyrannizes over another, it cannot
logically take it amiss if the latter reacts. Men are made that way ...’24 He
also comments, with a degree of impatience, on the failure of Ireland to
have yet achieved independence:

Had Pyrrhus not fallen by a beldam’s hand in Argos or Julius Caesar not been knifed
to death. They are not to be thought away.Time has branded them and fettered they
are lodged in the room of the infinite possibilities they have ousted.40
Immediately after this section, ‘Dolph’, the Shem figure, is struck by
‘Kev’, the Shaun figure: ‘And Kev was wreathed with his pother’.41 It is
interesting that this fraternal conflict occurs directly after a summary of
Anglo-Irish culture and then O’Connell, Parnell, and Connolly. This
being Finnegans Wake, the violent reaction to a history lesson could be
read in any number of ways. Perhaps Kev is unable to tolerate his brother’s
flippant attitude and responses to tradition that, for Kev, ought to be
venerated. However, it is tempting to see Joyce here hinting at the
‘fraternal’ conflict of the Civil War, with Irish culture and political events
leading up to this moment. This would connect with ‘the invocation of
Giordano Bruno (Bruno the Nolan) suggests clashing perspectives with
no resolution’.42The young brothers ‘are ready ... to bring about a fall’ in
the next chapter.43 As Kitcher notes, ‘HCE’s demise is ... framed in a
standard pattern of history; the young grow in knowledge and power and
seize control from their fathers’.44 So, the leaders of different Irish
emancipatory political movements are not just historical events to be
followed, they are as examples for the children to follow. In the following
chapter, according to Kitcher,
HCE is forced to defend himself, but angry voices denounce him and vilify him.
Their chorus culminates in a new ballad, which ... celebrates his passing. As the
exultant, accusatory voices depart, a brief coda shows us the defeated HCE, having
drunk the dregs from the glasses left by his customers, collapsed on a box in the corner
of the bar.45
1916 is alluded to in order to illustrate the inter-generational power
struggle of the Wake, while simultaneously linking to the fraternal
conflicts of early twentieth- century Ireland. By connecting this event to
the central family of the Wake, 1916 is seen not as a Yeatsian watershed
but rather as part of an inevitable historical pattern, part of something
recurring, like the fixed dynamics of family life – sibling rivalries, youthful
revolts against established orders.
In a coincidence of contraries, the catholicism of O’Connell and the
revolutionary socialism of Connolly converge in this section. However,
moving worlds 16.1 23
Shem can be seen as youthful Republican usurpers to the old and stale
authority of the Crown (Shaun’s job as a postman links him to the action
at the General Post Office), but that does not mean that HCE himself is
always the status quo figure. His shadowy indiscretions link him to Parnell,
and the mocking song, the ‘Ballad of Persse O’Reilly’, means that another
fallen leader – Patrick Pearse – is also linked to the Wake’s central figure
(although The O’Rahilly/Michael Joseph O’Rahilly is present here as
well).32 So HCE – in keeping with the text’s focus on the meeting of
contraries – can be both the incumbent and the insurgent. HCE is usually
a falling figure, but he is associated with English authority (see, for
example, the reference to Cromwell33) as well as with Irish nationalists.
Furthermore, the Wake is not ‘set’ at any one historical point – the conflict
and division of the twin brothers is suggestive of partition but also of the
Civil War.34 As Nicholas Allen has commented of theWake, ‘If the book’s
pages contain no declaration of a political position, there is the
representation of a troubled terrain’.35
In Chapter II.ii of Finnegans Wake, we have a reference to James
Connolly within a context of Irish emancipatory politics at a point in
the book in which the children begin to plot the downfall of their parents.
Here the children are upstairs in the father’s pub, studying their
schoolbooks. By the end of the chapter the youngsters are ‘united in a
desire to overcome their parents’.36 In this section we are first presented
with a list of Anglo-Irish writers: ‘This is Steal, this is Barke, this is Starn,
this is Swhipt, this is Wiles, this is Pshaw, this is Doubbllinnbbayyates’.37
Then, in an echo of the ‘Museyroom’ section of the Wake: ‘This is brave
Danny weeping his spache for the popers. This is cool Connolly wiping
his hearth with brave Danny. And this, regard! How Chawleses Skewered
parparaparnelligoes between brave Danny boy and the Connolly.
Upanishadem! Top. Spoken hath L’arty Magory. Eregobragh. Prouf!’38
Shem, the artistic rebel figure of the text (based on Joyce himself), relates
to Steele, Burke, Sterne, Swift, Wilde, Shaw and Yeats as writers, and to
O’Connell, Parnell, and Connolly as liberators or revolutionaries. The
section above is a capsule history – in sequential order, unusually – of
Irish writers followed by Irish liberators (or those who aspired to be
liberators). The figure of Parnell or ‘Chawleses Skewered
parparaparnelligoes’ fits ‘between’ the eras of ‘Danny’/O’Connell and
‘Connolly’/ James Connolly hinting at Parnell as a kind of halfway house
between the two.39‘Skewered’ suggests Joyce’s old bitterness towards those
who he felt had betrayed Parnell and the text’s telltale guilty stutter enters
the text here. For Joyce, Parnell is always central to any discussion on Irish

and the absence of a straightforward statement from him on the Rising.
Beyond this, the disappearance of much of central Dublin and the
question of permanence or otherwise of seemingly firmly established
things are themes which recur in Joyce’s work. As James Fairhall writes:
‘[Joyce’s] pre-1914 self probably never imagined that dull, solid, colonial
Dublin was in danger of vanishing. But after the Easter Rising, the
Russian Revolution, and the continuing slaughter of the Great War, many
things once thought permanent were receding into memory or had taken
on an air of mortality’.51 Joyce famously commented that he wanted to
create in Ulysses ‘a picture of Dublin so complete that if the city one day
suddenly disappeared from the earth it could be reconstructed out of my
book’.52 Ulysses ‘meticulously recreates the life and geography of Dublin
in 1904 – partly destroyed in the Easter Rising of 1916 – further escaping
the “nightmare” of history through deeper recursions into memory in
the novel’s concluding section’.53 This process is taken much further in
Finnegans Wake.
But the interiority of Joyce’s work, where the violence of 1916 is
fleetingly registered, is also a place of combat and defense. Throughout
Joyce’s career a connection is drawn between the mind and conflict. In his
1901 letter to Henrik Ibsen, Joyce writes of his interest in the Norwegian
playwright’s ‘battles’: ‘not the obvious material battles but those that were
fought and won behind your forehead’.54 The mind is always the site of
the real conflicts – or retreats – in Joyce’s work, whether in a struggle
with paternal authority in A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man – ‘But
he’ll beat you here, said the little old man, tapping his forehead and raising
his glass to drain it’ – or in a reaction to the imperial (and clerical)
presence in the ‘Circe’ episode of Ulysses – ‘(he taps his brow) But in here
it is I must kill the priest and the king’.55 As Declan Kiberd has written
of the main characters of Ulysses, ‘Each … is driven back into his or her
head as a consequence of frustration and defeat in the outer world’
something which is ‘a defensive tactic of the marginalized’.56 By Finnegans
Wake, the mind and its attendant language become the only available
refuge since it is – according to the Humean idealist philosophy to which
Joyce becomes increasingly attracted – all we really have access to. This
aesthetic is also a Celtic form of interiority since, for Joyce, Hume was a
Celtic philosopher.57 However, this approach can also be read as an antiimperial gesture, since Joyce associated materialism with English culture:
I confess that I do not see what good it does to fulminate against English tyranny
while the tyranny of Rome still holds the dwelling place of the soul. Neither do I see
moving worlds 16.1 25
this is also mixed with sacred language (‘Upanishads’, suggesting the
‘sacralisation’ of the Rising) and with British militarism (‘Up Guards and
at ’em’, attributed to the Duke of Wellington at the Battle of Waterloo).
Conflating the Easter Rising with the Battle of Waterloo may seem a
bizarre conjunction. However, this type of juxtaposition is central to the
treatment of history in Finnegans Wake:
In Finnegans Wake, virtually each and every reference to a specific historical event or
figure is immediately modified by means of a verbal ambiguity or contrary incident
that complicates its univocal reality and negates its significance or purposiveness. If,
then, one were to posit or affirm as a governing myth the whole of the course of
history, as exhibited in Vico’s The New Science, the method of ‘the coincidence of
opposites’ would enable and entail the undoing or negation of that entire plot ... A
fictional retelling of a dream in which the Vichian phenomenon of historical
recurrence is transformed into a random series of nonteleological happenings
undermines any conception of a historical process. Since the language of the
narration of the series or sequence of episodes combines disparate events in its single
words or phrases, it obscures sequentiality. The denial of temporal sequentiality leads,
beyond the negation of teleology, to the affirmation of the illusory unreality of
history.46
Fittingly, the topic of Easter 1916 rises again in its ‘ricorso’ section. The
Wake is based on a Viconian pattern of history in which civilizations move
through three fixed phases and a ‘ricorso’ in which the system is set going
again. As Damon Franke has noted:
The opening clamor of the ricorso sets forth the theme of Easter: ‘Array! Surrection!’.47
Among the loudest reverberations of such an exclamation, however, the Irish
insurrection of 1916 had already changed the connotations of ‘Easter.’ In the aftermath
of the Easter Rising, it is unlikely that any person living in Ireland could hear the
term, ‘[s]urrection,’ and not think of the rebellion. In fact, ‘surrection’ derives from the
Latin surgere, ‘to rise,’ and etymologically denotes ‘rising’. ‘Resurrection’ suggests ‘rising
again,’ and ‘insurrection’ equates to a ‘rising up or within.’48
Insurrection is inevitably a repeated thing then, as natural and
ungovernable as an erection and as inevitable as the following
detumesence. The history of great men or civilizations is subject to the
same processes of rising and falling as a penis: ‘Gricks may rise and Troysirs
fall’.49 As Joyce said of his own work, ‘the thought is always simple’.50
Joyce assigns no special significance to the Easter Rising in his final work
of fiction – the conception of history at work in Finnegans Wake does not
allow it. It is telling that clearest reference to the Rising is in the ‘ricorso’,
the section of the text which most obviously highlights the theme of
historical repetition.

the use in bitter invectives against England, the despoiler, or in contempt for the vast
Anglo-Saxon civilization, even if it is almost entirely a materialist civilization.58
As Colin MacCabe has suggested, ‘Finnegans Wake, with its sustained
dismemberment of the English language and literary heritage, is perhaps
best understood in relation to the struggle against imperialism’.59 This
assault is a continuation and elaboration of a feature of Ulysses which
Andrew Gibson has called Joyce’s ‘Celtic revenge’.60 Richard Begam
points out, ‘Joyce is not unsympathetic to the larger goal of the Revival
– establishing a genuinely Irish culture – but ... he is hostile to the specific
means it employed’.61 On a similar note, Declan Kiberd writes that ‘there
is good reason to see Joyce as someone who felt himself a part (however
angular a part)’ of the Irish literary revival.62 Likewise, there is good reason
to see Joyce as someone in favour of most of the aims of the leaders of
the 1916 Rising, but – as a pacifist – not the means employed. The events
of 1916 become subsumed into the ‘unreal’ history of Finnegans Wake, a
text which itself can be read as an anti-imperial and ‘Celtic’ insurrection.
Within this interior, idealist text, the Easter Rising itself is seen as an
inevitable part of the repetitive undulations of human history: ‘Phall if
you but will, rise you must’.63

ХЧЭ обычно рассматривают как поверженного персонажа ,но он может быть ассоциирован как с английской властью( обратите внимание, например, на отсылку к Кромвелю)33, так и с ирландскими националистами. Более того , «Поминки» не «существуют» в каком-либо историческом отрезке – конфликт и разделение братьев наводит на мысль о Разделении Ирландии ,но также и о Гражданской войне.34 Как комментировал «Поминки» Николас Аллен « Если на страницах книги нет декларации политической позиции, есть представление проблемного поля».35
Во главе II.ii «Поминок по Финнегану» есть отсылка к Джеймсу Коннолли в контексте ирландской политики эмансипации в момент ,когда дети планируют заговор, чтобы свергнуть родителей. Здесь дети наверху ,в отцовском пабе ,занимаются уроками. Шем, бунтарь от искусства(основанный на личности самого Джойса) в этом тексте ссылается на писателей Стила, Берка, Стерна, Свифта, Уальда, Шоу и Йейтса и на О’Коннелла, Парнелла и Коннолли - борцов за свободу и революционеров. Фрагмент выше - это комбинированная история – в последовательности , необычно, что ирландские писатели идут перед освободителями( или теми кто желали быть освободителями).Фигура Парнелла , или «Беззубый вертится вокруг туда-суда» втискивается «между» эпохой «Дэнни»/О'Коннела и «Коннолли»/Джеймс Коннолли намекает на Парнелла как компромисс между этими двумя.39«Беззубый» означает старую обиду Джойса на тех, кто ,как ему казалось, предал Парнелла, и текст намекакт на виноватое заикание . Сразу же после этого фрагмента, « Дольф»,персонаж Шема поражен «Кевом» ,персонажем Шона: «И Кев возненавидел брата»41. Занятно, что этот конфликт братьев происходит сразу после описания англо-ирландской культуры и ,в дальнейшем, О’Коннелла, Парнелла и Конноли. И это «Поминки по Финнегану, жестокая реакция на урок истории может быть прочитана любым количеством способов. Возможно. Кев не может терпеть несерьезное отношение и реакции брата на традиции, которые ,по мнению Кева, нужно чтить. Не смотря на то, что соблазнительно представить ,что Джойс здесь намекает на «братский» конфликт Гражданской войны, с ирландской культурой и политическими событиями, ведущими к этому. В следующей главе по мнению Кичера,
«ХЧЭ был вынужден защищать себя, но озлобленные голоса обвиняли и очерняли его. Их хор закончился новой балладой, которая …. праздновала его кончину. Когда ликующие, обличающие голоса ушли, краткая партия объявляет поверженного ХЧЭ, пьющего остатки из стаканов посетителей, развалившегося на коробке в углу бара.»45
1916 упоминается ,чтобы проиллюстрировать конфликт поколений ,разразившийся в «Поминках» ,при этом одновременно связать с братскими конфликтами в Ирландии начала двадцатого века .Связывая эти события с центральной семьей в «Поминках», 1916 не кажется водоразделом по Йейтсу, а является частью неизбежной исторической закономерности, часть чего-то повторяющегося, как неизменное развитие семейной жизни – соперничества родственников, юношеские восстания против установленных правил.
В совпадении противоположностей, католицизм О’Коннелла и революционный социализм Коннелли сходятся в этом фрагменте. Однако, это также смешивается со священным языком(«Упанишады» подразумевает «сокрализацию» Восстания) и с британским милитаризмом(«Вперед ,гвардейцы, на врага!» отсылка к Герцогу Веллингтону в битве при Ватерлоо).Объединение Пасхального восстания и битвы при Ватерлоо может показаться странным сочетанием. Однако, такого типа сопоставление является центральным для толкования истории в «Поминках по Финнегану»:
«В «Поминках по Финнегану» практически каждая отсылка к определенному историческому событию или фигуре немедленно преобразовывается средствами словесной двусмысленности, или ,напротив , событие усложняет свою однозначную реальность и отвергает свою важность или целенаправленность. Если бы кто-то постулировал или утверждал в качестве руководящего мифа весь курс истории, как это сделано у Вико в « Новой науке», метод « совпадения противоположностей» позволил бы и навлек уничтожение или отрицание всего сюжета .Художественный пересказ сна, в котором феномен Вика о исторической цикличности превращен в ряд случайных нетеологических событий, подрывает любую концепцию исторического процесса. Поскольку язык повествования серии или цепочки эпизодов связывает несопоставимые события в единые слова или фразы, это запутывает последовательность. Отказ от временной последовательности ведет, помимо отрицания телеология, к утверждению иллюзорной нереальности истории.»46
Соответственно, тема Пасхального восстания 1916 года предстает вновь в своей « рекурсивной» части. «Поминки» основаны на виконианской модели, в которой цивилизация движется через три неизменные фазы и «рекурсию» ,в которой система воспроизводиться вновь. Как заметил Деймон Франке:
Вступительный грохот рекурсии объясняют Пасхальную тему: « Ура! Воскрешение!»47. Среди самых громких ревербаций такого восклицания, однако, Ирландское восстание 1916 года уже сменило коннотацию «Пасхи». В последствии Пасхального восстания маловероятно что есть человек в Ирландии, который, услышав термин «воскрешение» ,не подумает о восстании. На самом деле «surrection» (воскрешение) происходит от латинского «sugere» «восстать» и этимологически обозначает « rising again» (восстание вновь ) и « insurrection» (восстание) равно «rising up and within» ( восстать или возрастать внутри).48

Вопрос Джойса и Восстания ,возможно, наиболее осмыслен в понятиях отсутствия и исчезновения. У нас есть отсутствие Джойса в Ирландии и отсутствие прямого высказывания о Восстании. Помимо этого, исчезновение большей части центрального Дублина и вопрос постоянства или ,с другой стороны, казалось бы устоявшихся вещей –тем ,которые повторялись в работах Джойса. Как пишет Джеймс Фейрхолл: «Джойс до 1914 года наверняка бы не мог представить этот скучный, массивный ,колониальный Дублин на грани исчезновения. Эта эстетика к тому же являетcя кельтcкой формой внутреннего мира, поскольку для Джойса Юм был кельтским философом.57 Однако, этот подход можно расценивать как антиимперский жест, так как Джойс ассоциировал материализм с английской культурой:
