Too much choice? Jul 20, 2010

Crikey don't know what to think. Was just convinced by Microsoft's offering but there seem to be so many others out there that everyone is raving about. I suppose my number one concern is that it is not going to gobble up all resources nor do I want it to pester me constantly to upgrade to a paid-for version, which reviews seem to say Avira does a lot (?). Does that change the picture? If it doesn't have to be free but allows me to forget it's even there then should it be Norton's Internet Security (or do the freebies still win out)?

NOD32! Jul 20, 2010

Definitely the best one we have used. Light, simple, installs in seconds, updates automatically and in an unobtrusive way... If you choose Norton you will soon have the feeling that someone stole your computer!

Avast, Comodo & (probably) Apple ? Jul 20, 2010

lidija68 wrote:

I use avast, and I'm very happy with it.

Yes I also use it, lightweight, optional silent/gaming mode, easy & light update system...no problems at all.

Couple that with Comodo Firewall, and no viruses/malwares ever come to me ever since. Although Comodo is a little difficult to setup, but the security provided is good, IMO.

If I have some money to invest (or burn, depend on your view ) I will go with Apple (Macbook series), since its system difference from PC will render most viruses irrelevant.

Norton 360 Jul 20, 2010

Has served me very well for years. It may not be the fastest on the market, but is the most thorough. And thoroughness is much more important than speed.

Avira popups Jul 20, 2010

Avira generated a promotional popup EVERY time Windows had been started (and sometimes further popups while Windows had already been running for a while).

There was a recommendation somewhere on the internet on how to modify the registry of the system in order to get rid off the popups - didn't work for me though.

Two anti-virus programmes Jul 20, 2010

Karletto wrote:

I would definitely NOT suggest running two anti-virus programmes on the same machine for two reasons.

Firstly, when installing a software like this, my experience is that the software normally suggests uninstalling any other similar software already installed first, as otherwise a conflict between the two may occur.

Secondly, not following this advice I experimented with two anti-virus programmes activated at the same time and the result was as indicated above: XP froze just seconds after it was booted.

agree with Joachim Jul 20, 2010

Do NEVER install 2 anti-virus programmes at the same time. Even if they don’t freeze your pc, both anti-virus will consider virus another one and try to destroy or stop it.

I am surprised to see so many options I always had the idea that Kaspersky is the best antivirus, highly recommended by specialists. It is actually the most used and trusted antivirus in Moldova and probably in Russia and Ukraine. I also use it and I am happy with it (my laptop is happy, too).

As about 2 antiviruses on the same computer, I say never! (again) My Windows XP froze, just like in case of Joachim, so make sure you completely uninstall the old one, reboot your computer and then install the new one.

I had to get rid of Norton products after a decade using them... quite simply because I got a virus Norton could not find or remove. NOD32 got rid of it in minutes, apart from bringing the feeling that my computer was mine again!

A bit off-topic - how to really remove ZoneAlarm completely Jul 20, 2010

Veronica Lupascu wrote:

Thanks to Veronica's remarks, I was reminded of the fact that if you really want to completely remove ZoneAlarm from your system, you would probably have to follow a rather long list of actions after uninstalling.

You would most likely have to make sure that certain directories, files and registry entries have been removed - and if they haven't, you would have to delete them manually.

The detailed procedure of this can be found on the net.

Kaspersky Internet Security Jul 20, 2010

I definitely suggest Kaspersky Internet Security (not Kaspersky Antivirus). In the past I used Norton, Nod, F-Secure, AVG... and I can say that Kaspersky is absolutely the best, not only in terms of protection, but also of speed and lightness. There is also a very useful preview of the e-mails you receive, so that you are able to immediately cancel the ones you don't want to download.

My two cents

Kaspersky Internet Security Jul 21, 2010

Not too long ago, I had problems with those blackmail fake virus alarms on my computer every couple of weeks. These malware programs install as drive-by downloads, so they are almost impossible to avoid, particularly on highly frequented websites. Just when browsing in search of terminology, I clicked on a normal looking medical link in Google and - wham! "Your computer is infected bla bla bla. For $40 dollars, we get rid of everything." Usually a system restore cures the issue, but one time the program blocked everything and I had to re-install my entire hard drive.
Since then, I have been test-driving a couple of programs, just to get hit again.
So far, nothing with Kaspersky. What I also like is that you can place specific programs such as browsers into a Safe Run environment, a "virtual protected environment". This should prevent these drive-by downloads from installing anything on your hard drive. Kaspersky also provides a virtual keyboard to enter passwords and similar sensitive data.

Agree. The same feeling of hijacked computer with McAfee products. Another free/paied good and unobtrusive AV that hasn't been mentioned here is Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, but as it has been said here before:

Never install two AV together, if you do not want to get in trouble.

Fully agree: a PC with two AV together is heavily pregnant with problems.

And I also second Pablo's recommendation concerning Avast. It is one of the best AV software on the market, light and reliable. It was a greate relief when several years ago I switched from Norton to Avast.
