German to English translations [PRO]
Tech/Engineering - Electronics / Elect Eng / EMC Testing
German term or phrase: Einhaltung von Luft- und Kriechströmen
One task in a list of EMC (electromagnetic compatibility) testing tasks that an accredited testing institute is supposed to carry out (entire task shown above).

Luftstrom - air flow
Kriechstrom - leakage current, current leak

So what is the task, check to make sure they are within acceptable limits, stop them...? Do I have the terms wrong?

ofservance of limits for through-air and creepage currents or flash-over currents
Explanation:
I suppose you have a wrong pair of terms. An air flow is non-electrical. What the editor may have meant, is reference to Luft- und Kriechstrecken (distances and creepages).

en clearance
shortest distance in air between two conductive parts
NOTE – This distance applies only to parts that are exposed to the atmosphere and not to parts which are insulated parts or covered with casting compound.
de Luftstrecke, f
http://www.electropedia.org/iev/iev.nsf/display?openform&iev...

en creepage distance
shortest distance along the surface of a solid insulating material between two conductive parts
de Kriechstrecke
http://www.electropedia.org/iev/iev.nsf/display?openform&iev...

Other possiblity: The editor meant current over surfaces (creepage current) and through air (Überschlag, Durchschlag)

en flashover
electric breakdown between conductors in a gas or a liquid or in vacuum, at least partly along the surface of solid insulation
de Überschlag, m
http://www.electropedia.org/iev/iev.nsf/display?openform&iev...

en (electric) breakdown
abrupt change of all or part of an insulating medium into a conducting medium resulting in an electric discharge
de (elektrischer) Durchschlag

Another possible term (for "Fehlerstrom") is current in the fault (through the air gap "Luftspalt").

Clearance
The shortest distance between two conductive parts, or between a conductive part and the bounding surface of the equipment, measured through air.

Creepage Distance
The shortest path between two conductive parts, or between a conductive part and the bounding surface of the equipment, measured along the surface of the insulation.

Thanks. You all pretty much finally arrived at the same conclusion, but this was the first answer in that direction; they meant "-strecken" not "-strömen". I woud divide up the points but don't know how, so am leaving it to the community.

Wait a minute; its probably not 'air flow' - rather current flow across an air gap

neutral  Johannes Gleim: cannot be maintenance, as Einhalten means not exceeding limits. Maintenance means to warrant a minimum current. You should say "maintenance of upper limits for fault currents"
12 hrs
-> Perhaps you should look up the definition of maintenance - it has a great deal more meanings than 'Wartung' - You also 'maintain' tolerances - which was my suggestion.

Explanation:
Gemäß IEC 60079-7:2006

Man könnte air distance auch durch clearance ersetzen.

“Do I have the terms wrong?”

I asked my contacts at Siemens on your behalf. They told me the correct German should be: Einhaltung von Luft- und Kriechstrecken, just as Bernd quietly observes in his changing of the source term.
