During a district court sitting in Longford recently, Judge Seamus Hughes directed that a manager at Lionbridge – the company which provides the courts with interpretation services - attend one of his courts “as soon as possible” to enable him to address what he believes is “a serious decline” in the service being provided by the company.

The judge’s order was made after a case involving a foreign man who was being assisted by a female interpreter from the company.

For more on this story, see this week’s Longford Leader.

This piece of news, published at http://www.longfordleader.ie/news/local/judge_hits_out_at_interpreters_service_1_3229772 , confirms the fears that the quality of court interpreting is likely to decline considerably because of the decision of the UK Ministry of Justice to outsource such services instead of using the National Register. More information is available here.

Attila, thanks for providing the link. Very interesting. We should now watch out to what will follow up from this situation.

Longford is in Ireland not the UK Nov 10, 2011

Whilst I understand the real concern about the standard of interpreting services, I would like to suggest that evidence from Ireland does not as such shed much light on the current position in the UK. Obviously, the Irish experience may be similar but I would not draw too many conclusions from this when addressing the debate in the UK.

The impression I get is that the judges within the Irish legal system have too high expectations from the interpreters hired. What do the judges expect when the interpreters are only paid 18€ an hour, a pittance bearing in mind the cost of living in Ireland?
