Hey there! Can anyone recommend a good designer or "CV service"?
Maybe you've designed a great portfolio yourself...

I want something nicer than my boring PDF CV to send to potential clients.
I've thought about posting translations as blog posts and just mailing the link.

I can do the translations, I can provide the content, and I can pay, I just don't really know how to go about designing my CV/portfolio.

You are right, your CV is boring – but not because it lacks glitz, but because it is not suitable for seeking freelance work.

Bear in mind that many translation customers receive large numbers of CVs, and unless you can capture their attention in the first 10 seconds your CV is likely to be filed in the dustbin.

You are right, your CV is boring – but not because it lacks glitz, but because it is not suitable for seeking freelance work.

Bear in mind that many translation customers receive large numbers of CVs, and unless you can capture their attention in the first 10 seconds your CV is likely to be filed in the dustbin.

The problem with your CV is that it is designed for full-time employment. So you start off with much personal and geographic information, plus further on much detail about your education and employment history– most of it irrelevant to translation.

A CV for freelance work, particularly for English customers, needs to be different. Spell out at the top what you can offer that others can't, why they should choose you rather than someone else. You need to specify what sort of translation work you do, what you specialise in, what recent projects you have worked on, and why you are special.

And cut it down to one page.

Then you are ready to invite customers to look at your website, your blog, perhaps Facebook. They can be as glitzy as you like. Now all this is a good idea.

This is perhaps not the answer you were expecting. But it works. Upgrade your CV, give examples of your work on your website/blog etc, and you improve your chances.

Thanks Aug 6, 2011

Thank you for your ideas. Will include them my CV.

Peter, thanks for looking at my CV.
You are right, sometimes sticking to the standard format overrides my common sense.

And regarding your ProZ profile, Emal, Aug 6, 2011

I don't think "I think I know what I'm doing" inspires any confidence in you or your abilities. Why not be more positive:" I know what I'm doing"?
